Help......my kid is overseas in Ireland......
she badly chipped her front teeth when she was young (diving into a pool that she thought was deeper than it looked ~ thank G-d she didn't break her neck).

Anyways, her bonding broke off on her front teeth - which it tends to DO every few years - and she's OVER THERE. I have NO CLUE how to find a good dentist over there that could put on new bonding material. I called our dentist and the American Dental Association....they have no clue of where/how I should find someone. My google attempts were of no value either.

Any thoughts/ideas?

TIA

12. Use Google or the phone book
And call up first to ask what the price would be. Chances are it'll only be a few hundred $. Her travel insurance will pay for it, most likely. Stop panicking, it's not like Ireland is some sort of third world country - the dentists over there are just as good as the ones here.

13. "The dentists over there are ust as good as the ones here"
Are you SURE about that? I don't know myself. The thing with bonding (especially on your front teeth) is that they need to shave a little bit off every time they do the bonding......if you're only 20 or so and the bonding breaks off every 5 years or so.....you've got to make sure that you're gonna have some "tooth" left by the time you're 80 or so. You don't want to have some hack, who isn't too sure of the procedure, taking off too much of your tooth in order to place the bonding.

That's MY concern.

15. Of course I'm sure about it. I come from Ireland.
Why are you worrying about 'some hack' dentist? It's kind of insulting.

21. Well, you can feel pretty safe about your daughter
Medical standards and technology over there are easily as good as those here. Per head of population, Ireland is actually wealthier than the US, and the public health system over there is pretty awesome.

22. I don't think you have to worry about every five years
My son had his two front teeth knocked half off playing racketball when he was 13 and he is 37 now and the original bond is still on. At the time they said it could last for a very long time as long as he was careful with things like pop bottles, they were glass then! So next bonding may last a lot longer for you daughter.

17. Ryan air to Eastern Europe
I had an excellent dentist work on my teeth in Katowice (which has flights to Ireland). You can get excellent work done behind the Iron Curtain for about 1/3 of U.S. prices.

19. my mom's crown fell off on the first day of a two-week trip to England
Edited on Fri Apr-10-09 07:13 PM by renate
She got some temporary patch-type stuff at the drugstore/chemists'.

If it was available in England, I assume it'd be available in Ireland. She just asked the pharmacist for help and that's what he recommended. You don't get much--I think you mix it and apply it with a toothpick. But it lasted her long enough to get back home and to her own dentist.

Edited to add: I'm sure it saved her a ton of money and hours of hassles with the insurance company.

Good luck!

24. Contact the embassy and ask for their assistance.
Also try to get hold of a Fodors or Lonely Planet guide and see what advice they offer.
