SLC Police Chief Won't Comply with New Immigration Law Provision
(KCPW News) Salt Lake City Police Chief Chris Burbank says he will not cross-deputize his officers to serve as federal immigration agents, as specified under a sweeping illegal immigration law that goes into effect in July. He's come under fire from the bill's co-sponsor, Representative Mike Noel, for not agreeing to participate. But Chief Burbank told KCPW's Elizabeth Ziegler that cross deputizing is not mandatory.

This is getting big news in Salt Lake, since we've got one of the fastest growing Hispanic communities in the west. Burbank's reasoning is that the police won't racially profile and he feels this will deter other legal Mexicans from reporting real crime.

Predictably, it has set off a firestorm here in Utah.

1. He's right. Immigration enforcement is a federal responsibility, not a local one.
I live in Maricopa Co. Arizona where Joe Arpaio and his goons have been given INS status and they are focusing on that (because it's popular) to the exclusion of the many other things they need to be doing. As a result we have nearly 40,000 unserved felony warrants, many of which are for serious violent crimes while sheriff's deputies round up janitors and busboys. And many undocumented immigrants are terrified to report crimes, which gives Mexican drug cartels free reign over their communities.

Furthermore, immigration enforcement either needs to go after the employers or not bother.

Not a real lawman by any stretch of the imagination.

4. Tell me about it.
6 full-time PR flacks on the Maricopa taxpayer payroll, one of whom is dedicated to international PR. He's a fucking walking reality show, but unfortunately the voters here think he's the bee's knees. :puke:

6. I hosted a debate watching party in October for the Veep debate. Big fun was had watching Biden
trounce Sanctimonious Sarah untii--God help me--someone mentioned Sheriff Joke and one of my guests professed her absolute respect, admiration, and loyalty to him.

You coulda heard a pin drop. About 24 people stopped eating and conversing and instead began to uncomfortablyplan graceful exits.

I was FLOORED; thank goodness she left almost immediately and I managed to salvage some of the evening.

15. This is not uncommon
My bf is a former party official and we are both huge progressive activists. His family is about as left wing as they come but on evening when we were out for dinner Arpaio's name came up in conversation and his sister-in-law, also a staunch Democrat, who was sitting across from me said, "What's wrong with Sheriff Joe? Why fix what isn't broken?"

5. Why is Sheriff Burbank a thug
and a PR whore? I don't live or even visit very often Salt Lake so I don't know this man.

10. I beg your pardon?
I was asking a question, not making a judgment. Perhaps you ought to work on your own reading comprehension skills.

Not to mention your manners.

2. I applaud the police chief's stance
It's a federal problem, so let the feds deal with it. The police have their own problems to deal with, and profiling just ensures that their work is made all the harder. When immigrants fear the police so much that they won't cooperate, the police are stymied at every turn.

9. Whoa!! Canadian alert!! There are several rules to spot the Canadians among us.
It is probably because it would be hard in Utah to enforce illegal immigrant laws against Canadians. Its hard to tell them from real Americans but there are ways.

Yes! They are clever devils. They can hide their accents. But there are ways to ferret these illegals out!!

!. They don't like wearing BLUE shirts. Ever see Howie Mandel or Alex Trebec in a Blue shirt? Hmmmmm? (the Toronto Blue Jays wear Blue... losers!!)

2. They are funny. Or at least TRY to be. Any night on Melrose or the Sunset Strip you can roust them from their BMWs, Lexus', and Canadian made GM cars where they live, homeless, striving to get their big break so they can TAKE AMERICAN JOBS AWAY. There are only a few spots at the Improv, Comedy Club and Laugh Factory. And those Factory jobs are for AMERICANS!!!!!

3. They don't like our bacon. Take a suspect out to breakfast. Order Bacon and eggs. If they turn up their nose at the bacon. Ask them: "Would you like a little ICE with that bacon? FOREIGNER!!"

:smoke:
