American cultures mix in New Mexico

BBC article about what makes the southwest unique: "Siobhann Tighe meets Native Americans who feel they have found a balance between traditional and modern ways of life." Apparently she is doing a series of reports on Native Americans starting April 13th.

1. Nice article and very typical
and even among people living very traditional lives on the Pueblos, I never found anything or anyone I couldn't relate to, not even when I was fresh out of Boston. If you're looking for the exotic, don't look here.

A local painter whose name escapes me did a wonderful painting of a Navajo couple in native dress singing along to opera, Tosca I think.

That says it all about this corner of the country. People here take what they can use from each other and combine it with what they have. I make a mean fry bread but prefer to eat it with maple syrup.

There's occasional intercultural friction, but like the locally grown chile, it just adds flavor.

I hope they eventually put this on BBCA. It would be fun to watch somebody else's impression of my part of the country. So far, it looks like she got the point.
