I have a dreadful trip ahead.
I must leave tomorrow morning early for a long drive to Kentucky. I am driving for two days. I just looked at the weather map and it is raining the entire journey. But I must go.

This may be the last time that I see my mother alive. She may recognize me and she may not? It is a gamble. But it is something I must do. I dread it. Think about me.

4. My dear kentuck...
I hold you, and your mother, in my heart...

Please, take your time, don't hurry, and arrive safely, OK?

Maybe take some favorite CD's (if your car will play them) and that might help pass the time...

I hope your mom will recognize you and be glad you're there...

Be of good cheer! At some level, she will know you're there, and appreciate your sacrifice...

7. Safe journey, kentuck.
I know it is hard, but I believe you are doing the right thing. Even if she does not recognize you, you recognize her; this is important.

Take care. I am thinking about you.

10. My thoughts are with you.
Even if she doesn't recognize you, you will know that you were there for her.

It's interesting how people have different perspectives.... For a long time, I felt scarred by being alone with my mom when she died, and waiting hours for my siblings to arrive (and having to resist the hospital staff who wanted to have her sent to the mortuary asap). I only found out years later that my sister felt every bit as scarred for arriving too late.

The bottom line is that you care, and you are doing your best to be there... and though I consider myself agnostic, I still feel like no matter what, those feelings are known when it counts most.

(((((hugs)))))

11. Mine was from NM to the east coast of Florida
and my mother didn't give any sign of recognizing me.

Still, it was worth it to allow her to die at home, surrounded by familiar things and to give my dad some support afterward.

And yes, you do have to do it. You will be glad you did.
