Darwin Award loser jumps into polar bear habitat at zoo

BERLIN, Germany (CNN) -- A polar bear attacked a woman at Berlin Zoo Friday afternoon after she climbed a fence and jumped into its habitat during feeding time, police said Saturday.

The bear attacks the woman during feeding time.

One adult polar bit her several times after she plunged into the moat, police said.

Zoo workers tossed rescue rings toward the woman to hoist her out and distract polar bears swimming nearby, said Goerg Gebhard, a Berlin police officer.

At one point the woman fell back into the water and was grabbed by a bear before she was eventually hoisted to safety.

"They saved her life," Gebhard told CNN.

The woman was severely injured and was being treated at a hospital, police said.

1. idiot, in cases like this it always seems to be the animals that are destroyed
i would be happier just to let the bears have her for lunch.

2. During feeding time, no less!
I hope she didn't offer to donate her brain to science, not that there was likely to have been much there.

9. Would Need A Microscope To Find that Brain!
She should, however, donate the body to science so doctors can figure out how a brain that small could keep the body alive!

4. She must have some sort of mental illness.
I can't imagine why a sane person would do such a thing.

5. I would really like to hear the internal monologue that lead to that
"well there is a huge fence, a moat, and dangerous polar bears"
"I better climb the fence and hop into the moat how could that go wrong"

OMG go to the link they have a picture of her being attacked. Someone needs to make a demotivational line for it.

Polar Bears:There is a reason they keep them behind a fence and a moat.

Polar Bears:So cute you could just hug them

Polar Bear Cage:How could that go wrong?

13. Another case
(sorry, don't know where it happened} that was on one of the animal TV shows. To get a picture a woman stepped over two fence restraints and got up close to the bars. The polar bear reached through and grabbed her by the thigh and wouldn't let go. A couple of men started hitting the bear with branches but the bear didn't pay any attention to them. Then for no known reason the bear let her go. Probably didn't like the taste. She had a broken bone and some muscle damage but survived.

18. did anyone else watch the footage?
Edited on Sun Apr-12-09 03:26 PM by carlyhippy
she went under water, the bear went under water and grabbed her by the back of her pants and pulled her out of the water. They didn't look too much like they were attacking, more like playing.....but again I didn't see the whole incident from the minute she jumped in. The woman was in their domain, what did she expect to happen? They didn't look too hungry, or all 3 of them would have attacked her at once.

I don't understand why in the world a grown woman would jump into a polar bear den, insanity, it's not the bears fault, it's all hers.
