cnn reporting the cargo ship captain is now FREE! He's now onboard
Edited on Sun Apr-12-09 12:51 PM by babylonsister
a Navy ship! :applause:

Family has known for several hours now. I'm sure they're elated!

cnn update: one pirate was on the closest military ship negotiating. The military (Navy Seals?) went in and got Phillips' attention. He dove overboard and the divers covered him, killing the remaining three pirates.

2. More than likely a ransom was paid with our tax dollars.
AIG insures many of these ships. When ransom is paid it is not paid by the owner of the vessel but by the insurance carrier.

6. 3 of the pirates were killed. 1 captured. I highly doubt ransom was paid.

7. We will never know the truth.
The global shipping industry has spent decades removing itself from regulations and rules while positioning the business to not be subject to the notion or reality of being "nation based". With this recent piracy episode everyone is ignoring that fact and wants to send in the calvary.

20. I am, of course, pleased that the Captain is ok.
But the ignorance about the maritime industry is staggering - especially if you call yourself a Democrat or progressive.

15. That's just stupid - 1 rescued captain, 3 dead pirates and 1 pirate in custody
Edited on Sun Apr-12-09 12:53 PM by jpak
Where does ransom payment figure into this?

It doesn't.

19. LOL, ya know it irritates the crap outta them!

Of course, it's never stopped them from just pulling shit outta their asses and making stuff up.

Just think, maybe if we tortured them with light sticks, we could've garnered some buried treasure too! :sarcasm:

12. NOW---there needs to be immediate plans made to prevent this shit from happening again.
Whether it's Q-ships, dummies used to attract and then destroy pirates, or heavy arming of all vessels, or other means, this shit could have been prevented.

NOW is the time to prevent future occurrences and there needs to be ZERO tolerance.

A small craft comes anywhere near a larger vessel and you blow them the fuck out of the water and ask questions later.

:patriot:

16. I think arming the cargo ships is going to have to happen.
The people on these ships have to be able to defend themselves.

Supposedly the cargo ship was full of supplies/humanitarian aid headed for Somalia, so someone's trying to help and hopefully understands what the Somalians are going through.

At least now there's a big magnifying glass on the situation.

28. Agreed, absolutely.
There's a whole lot going on that needs to have light shed on it, but these ships need to be less vulnerable and what happened could have been avoided with the right advance planning, preparation, and dealing with whatever is behind it all.

27. Details: an unmarked, suspicious, doesn't reply to communication attempts, and...
...has no business approaching the "personal space" of the ship in the most dangerous waters on earth.

Yes, sink them at the very least and then save the survivors, maybe.

and, coffee and donuts for the captain and crew who did the right thing.

:donut:

Unless you can describe a scenario like above where the small craft would be entirely innocent.
