4. The messed with the wrong President. Reagan would have given them anti-aircraft missiles.
And Dubya would have invaded the wrong country and made the pirates more powerful than ever before.

18. C'mon now be fair. Reagan SOLD the terrorists those planeloads of weapons.
Rumor is he could have funded a secret war on the profits they made...

7. I have no sympathy for pirates or hijackers. I have no interest in finding "common ground" with
them. They crossed that line a long long time ago.

I don't believe that is appropriate.

11. It's a reaction to a "progressive"
posting a thread titled "Pirates 2 - Navy 0" the other day (or something very similar) -- is Progressivism defined as only cheering against the US?

Edited on Sun Apr-12-09 03:06 PM by liberalmuse
But by their more politically correct term, 'Sea Bankers'.

On edit: :sarcasm:

But then, it doesn't really matter, does it.

20. The pirates kind of are the coast guard of Somalia.
Hidden headline from latest NYT article:

"One pirate named Ali, in Galkaiyo, Somalia, said the American Navy rescue won’t discourage other Somali pirate groups at all.

'As long as there is no just government in Somalia, we will still be the coast guard,' he said, adding: 'If we get an American, we will take revenge.'"

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/04/13/world/africa/13pirates.html?ref=global-home

Great, just what we needed, another enemy! So now, whereas, sailors from other nations will be treated like valuable assets, Americans (and presumably French citizens) will just be killed?

As I understand it, though, these guys used to be fishermen until the government fell apart and various other nation's fishing fleets started invading Somali waters pushing out the locals. One man's pirate is another man's coast guard?

21. Yeah right - these guys are the PIRATES of Somalia.
They are NOT the "Coast Guard" I don't see them rescuing anyone from sinking ships.

They are PIRATES, MURDERERD, KIDNAPPERS AND EXTORTIONISTS.

They can talk trash all they want, they lost and this shit is no longer tolerated.

And P.S. they can look for their "coast guard cutters" to be ripped to shreds rather soon courtesy of the air force.

22. Whoa there, Hoss.
Yes, they are pirates and extortionists, but who have they murdered?

These guys are businessmen. Dead merchant marines are valueless merchant marines.

I'm not defending what they do, but this situation isn't so black and white.

And, the USAF isn't going to be bombing anyone's "cutters" because these boats they use belong to someone else who wants them back. Sinking other people's ships will just wind up costing us the taxpayers more money we don't have.

26. One of the deaths you cited was killed either by the pirates or the
French marines who rescued the family in question. That story is linked twice.

The Taiwanese fisherman killed is cited three times and there's one Yemeni in the first citation.

So, that's one hostage killed either by the hostage takers or the rescuers, one Taiwanese fisherman killed because the owners wouldn't come up with the loot and one Yemeni killed under "fishy circumstances."

58 people have died of gun deaths in the US the past three weeks, including 8 police officers.

So, yes they have killed, at least, two people. But for the number of hostages they have, 250, and the ridiculous number of ships they've taken, not exactly a global crisis worthy of a muscular military response.

30. I agree.
What I'm wondering is, BTW, where are all our expensive, fancypants satellites cluttering up the heavens?

I should be easy enough to point one in the direction of the area (though vast) of the Indian Ocean and track all the shipping. I mean, you don't think they can't run some sort of computer algorithm to isolate suspect ships? I read these pirates use GPS devices they've appropriated from the ships they've seized to get around.

Can't we track those? I mean, everybody here has to have GPS chip in their cell phones nowadays so the police know where we are, why can't we figure out where they are?

29. It absolutely IS worthly of a muscular military response
and that's just the list of people killed by the Somalis that the newspapers feel worth covering. They are ALSO responsible for the French death. Your excuse making is ridiculous and beyond the pale. The fact that they have taken 200 hostages and lots of boats and extorted money and brandished weapons does NOT make them LESS culpable - it makes them MORE culpable.

And oh brother you are shifting the blame to the boat owners for not paying the ransom instead of attaching it where it belongs ON THE PIRATES WHO KILLED THE TAIWANESE SAILOR

:argh:
