Thai Protesters Defy Emergency Decree With Rallies (Update1)

Bloomberg) -- Thai anti-government protesters defied a state of emergency with stepped-up rallies and vowed to intensify their demonstrations until Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva resigns.
Protesters wielding clubs late yesterday blocked key intersections in the capital of Bangkok. The main highway to the country’s north was also blockaded and the national rail network paralyzed, according to television reports. Abhisit’s motorcade was attacked after he yesterday announced the emergency decree, the capital’s third since September, according to the broadcasts.
The turmoil raises the prospect that the army will intervene, said Paul Quaglia, director of PSA Asia, a Bangkok-based security and risk assessment consulting firm. “If it gets worse, the military probably will step in,” adding that he doesn’t see the situation deteriorating into “civil war.”
Thai soldiers fired tear gas today during an operation to disperse about 300 protesters from a key intersection in Bangkok, Agence France-Presse cited Colonel Sunsern Kaewkumnerd, an army spokesman, as saying. “We will start with soft measures and proceed to harder ones,” he said, adding the military “will avoid loss of life as instructed by the government.” ........(more)

TBILISI, Georgia (AP) — About 20,000 demonstrators kept up the pressure on Georgia's president to resign Friday, with some pelting his residence with cabbages and carrots on a second day of protests.
President Mikhail Saakashvili rejected their demands and called for talks.
The crowds were thinner than on Thursday, a national holiday, when three times as many demonstrators jammed the capital's main avenue, but the daily protests showed no sign of ending.
Their most bitter criticism is directed at the president's handling of the brief war last summer with Russia. The Georgian army was humiliated and the country lost territory as separatists and their Russian allies took full control of two breakaway Georgian regions. ........(more)
