The other side of the "pirate" story
(This article is a couple of months old, but perhaps it will help to educate the rah-rah chorus and those who foolishly believe the U.S. government and media actually tells you the truth)

You Are Being Lied to About Pirates
Johann Hari

Who imagined that in 2009, the world's governments would be declaring a new War on Pirates? As you read this, the British Royal Navy - backed by the ships of more than two dozen nations, from the US to China - is sailing into Somalian waters to take on men we still picture as parrot-on-the-shoulder pantomime villains. They will soon be fighting Somalian ships and even chasing the pirates onto land, into one of the most broken countries on earth. But behind the arrr-me-hearties oddness of this tale, there is an untold scandal. The people our governments are labeling as "one of the great menace of our times" have an extraordinary story to tell -- and some justice on their side.

<snip>

Yes: nuclear waste. As soon as the government was gone, mysterious European ships started appearing off the coast of Somalia, dumping vast barrels into the ocean. The coastal population began to sicken. At first they suffered strange rashes, nausea and malformed babies. Then, after the 2005 tsunami, hundreds of the dumped and leaking barrels washed up on shore. People began to suffer from radiation sickness, and more than 300 died. Ahmedou Ould-Abdallah, the UN envoy to Somalia, tells me: "Somebody is dumping nuclear material here. There is also lead, and heavy metals such as cadmium and mercury - you name it." Much of it can be traced back to European hospitals and factories, who seem to be passing it on to the Italian mafia to "dispose" of cheaply. When I asked Ould-Abdallah what European governments were doing about it, he said with a sigh: "Nothing. There has been no clean-up, no compensation, and no prevention."

At the same time, other European ships have been looting Somalia's seas of their greatest resource: seafood. We have destroyed our own fish-stocks by over-exploitation - and now we have moved on to theirs. More than $300m worth of tuna, shrimp, lobster and other sea-life is being stolen every year by vast trawlers illegally sailing into Somalia's unprotected seas. The local fishermen have suddenly lost their livelihoods, and they are starving. Mohammed Hussein, a fisherman in the town of Marka 100km south of Mogadishu, told Reuters: "If nothing is done, there soon won't be much fish left in our coastal waters."

<snip>

No, this doesn't make hostage-taking justifiable, and yes, some are clearly just gangsters - especially those who have held up World Food Programme supplies. But the "pirates" have the overwhelming support of the local population for a reason. The independent Somalian news-site WardherNews conducted the best research we have into what ordinary Somalis are thinking - and it found 70 percent "strongly supported the piracy as a form of national defence of the country's territorial waters." During the revolutionary war in America, George Washington and America's founding fathers paid pirates to protect America's territorial waters, because they had no navy or coast guard of their own. Most Americans supported them. Is this so different?

7. I don't remember seeing it here
A guy I know who is a 911 Truther sent it out last night though. He has been trying to discredit Obama for at least a year now. After seeing the pirates defeated, he decided they were the good guys. LOL

25. The title implies that it must be posted multiple times.
If we "are being lied to about pirates", "are" implies repetition. So the article probably has about two or three more repetitions before it can become self-fulfilling.

3. So...we we should justify bad acts by pointing to other bad acts...
I just don't get your logic. Seems to me that nuclear waste shouldn't "dumped" anywhere and pirates shouldn't be "Pirating" anywhere. One doesn't justify the other.

14. They are related
by destroying the Somalis' fishing grounds they destroyed their main livelihood. It's not a black and white issue.

21. So attacking a ship carrying relief supplies 300 miles out to sea
accomplished what for the pirates?

right, I'll move along to a topic that's worth my attention, such as how the Somali's are using children for soldiers.

28. No one's justifying the pirates - are you interested in the history, or...
does condemning it without even knowing the story of it satisfy you?

and this is a British article. Not that I'd make the distinction, myself.

6. yes, the dumping of toxic waste and the over fishing is deplorable.
No, the vast majority of the war lords/pirates don't give a flying fuck about it. If they did, they'd hold the ships for demands about it stopping or being cleaned up. They don't. They're in it for the money. And that stupid article has enough straw men in it to create a sizable army. It's no better now than when it was posted yesterday.

But seriously: I dig your theory about radiation turning people into pirates.

9. When you capture ships that are 300 miles outside of your territory
you aren't protecting your territorial waters.

When they were attacking fishing trawlers within their territory one could make a case that these guys were acting in their country's interest.

Now, they're attacking ships that aren't remotely within their territory and the motive is profit for a select few.

22. The coast of Somalia is over 2000 miles long
In your world, then, it would be impossible to dump waste off California and fish off Florida? You should tell that to U.S. corporations, who would do it in a heartbeat if they could get away with it.

Perhaps it would help your cause if you had even the remotest bit of knowledge on the topic in question, as the "laughing" simile really doesn't do much.

Unless, of course, you're not a big student of history or geography.

12. Total unadulterated BULLSHIT.
These thugs demand cash, there is absolutely no altruism to what they are doing. Any demands about waste are there simply to get poor people and delusional Americans to pity them.

They're thieves on the high seas.

Hanging is too good for 'em.

31. From the FSM:
"You may be interested to know that global warming, earthquakes, hurricanes, and other natural disasters are a direct effect of the shrinking numbers of Pirates since the 1800s. For your interest, I have included a graph of the approximate number of pirates versus the average global temperature over the last 200 years. As you can see, there is a statistically significant inverse relationship between pirates and global temperature."

There is also a graph but I am having trouble getting this (not mine) computer to copy it.
(Grr I hate PCs!)

Anyhow, here's the link:http://www.venganza.org/about/open-letter/
