SNL Joke: Chris Matthews Daydreams of Obama in a Loin Cloth

MSNBC's Chris Matthews, infamous for getting a “thrill” up his leg while drinking in a speech by Barack Obama and his ongoing adoration for the President (“He is the new us!”), became the punch line of a joke on NBC's own Saturday Night Live.

During the Weekend Update segment on the April 11 show, SNL's news anchor, Seth Myers(sic), delivered this “news” item, illustrated by a creative matching graphic:


"A new comic is being published this summer called 'Barack the Barbarian' which features the President in a loin cloth. Also featuring the President in a loin cloth: Chris Matthews' daydreams."

Not that much of a stretch. Or maybe no stretch at all.

CHANGE OF 'A' GUARD

THE new Washington, DC, A-list is in -- and for the most part, George W. Bush and his crew aren't on it. Washington Life magazine's list of the town's "A" names this year dropped Sen. Robert Byrd, Henry Paulson, Karl Rove, John Negroponte and Rep. Charles Rangel. On the list are, obviously, President and Michelle Obama, David and Susan Axelrod, Tom and Carole Geithner and George and Mari Will. On the "Toxic/Radioactive" list are: Marion Barry, Sen. Roland Burris, Alan Greenspan, Scooter Libby and Donald Rumsfeld. Funnily enough -- despite protestations from Democrats -- Dick Cheney still made the A-list.

THE PROBLEM WITH A DISCLAIMER is its coming off as defensive, especially when it's preemptive. Trouble is, it's damned if do/don't: NOT including it first results in the predictable problems.

No, he doesn't Dictaphone content to his gossip columnists. No, "gossip" does NOT equate to "UNtruth" (OR with "triviality" for that matter). These old time gossipers are more journalistically reliable than Tweety and such ilk. Frequently, political tidbits are here first, later to show up in more "respectable" venues. Keep friends close, enemies closer. Cherrypicking intel results in self-fulfilling FALSENESS. I got hooked on these gossipers when they were on the E!1 network and, when they were cancelled, tracked them down and they happened to be at the RAG (NY Post). 1. For what it is worth, I think Tweety's "thrill" is more about JFK parallels than

anything else. Clearly Matthews really admired JFK, was in the Peace Corp, etc.

3. Here's an update on Tweety, addressing his so-called JFK pride:

Tricky Dick would break out "The New NIXON." Tweety has a LONG history of twists and turns, generally with the trajectory being AWAY from us.


STAGE 1: He has said his family were "cloth coat (Rethugs)."

STAGE 2: A *degree* of authenticity derived from his possibly participating in the inspiration that Catholics in general and Irish Catholics took from the ascendancy of JFK. O.K., fine.

STAGE 3: He joined the Peace Corps, as he says, NOT from noble motives but just to avoid Vietnam. Some here say that in itself was "noble ENOUGH." Uh, he had other alternatives, like, going to Canada (too out there), going to jail (not an option), filing as a Conscientious Objector (too unreal). So this stage became one of SCRAMBLING FOR JOBS. He tried being a rent-a-cop as a Capitol policeman for three months. Then he hired on as a flunky in politics, and the name of the game in the LBJ era was to be a Dem.

STAGE 4: He was a convincing flunky and operative in Democratic politics for CARTER, Tip O'NEILL and others.

STAGE 5: A flunky only has power and prestige depending upon how successful his bosses are, so when RAYGUN beat the pants off of Tweety's bosses, he began TURNING seriously. Repeating, THE FLUNKY WORSHIPS SUCCESS. So he became a RAYGUN worshipper, this being his FIRST LEG TRICKLING period. Plus, his mentor, G.E.RUSSERT, who had blazed the trail for turncoatism, such as reaching out to LIMBOsevic, showed him the way into the media, meaning STOP being a partisan (which does NOT equate with being "fair") and reaching out to the former enemies. What followed was a decade of Tweety attacking all things Dem (and CLINTON) and Campaign 2000 in which he was a Rethug operative who eviscerated GORE five days per week. And then were the SECOND LEG TRICKLING years of Shrub worship. There wasn't ANYBODY, including Rethugs, more Shrub-licking. When the Iraq Attack came along, he suddenly became the biggest zenophobe and 'Murica booster around, performing the on-air execution of DONAHUE and accusing all Libs of "never seeing anything POSITIVE about America."

STAGE 6: Since around 2006 he started swinging slightly away from Shrub, despite a long flirtation with Mc5PLANEs. So he entered a possible THIRD LEG TRICKLING period, the length of which is in doubt.

Hope this helps. Yes, he IS that bad.

2. But Cheney?

Unless he's still got real, actual political power - as in serious blackmail potential or "I can have your children killed with one phone call" threats - I'm just not seeing why he's not on the "toxic" list.

I can't imagine any of the A-listers getting any closer than absolutely necessary at any public or private function. AFAIC, they may as well have predicted Tom Delay and Mark Foley's triumphant return to Washington's inner circle - as a couple.

Still, it'll be interesting to see if they're right.
