McCain’s daughter urges GOP to embrace gays

Meghan McCain, daughter of GOP presidential candidate Sen. John McCain, calls anti-gay sentiment among some Republicans “un-American,” adding, “I am determined to build a more-inclusive GOP not by making us sound more inclusive, but by doing it.” In her Daily Beast column, McCain admonishes her party to embrace the idea of personal freedom she says is at the heart of the push for marriage equality:

Personal freedoms are what makes this country the greatest country in the world. And just like the civil-rights and feminist movements before this, the movement toward gay equality and gay marriage is one I have absolute faith will triumph over prejudices. Moreover, I believe the Republican Party has, at this moment, the opportunity to come forward and play an instrumental role in securing gay rights. That’s why I’m speaking at the Log Cabin convention and couldn’t be prouder to be doing so. And yes, I’m still a Republican. Get used to it.*

1. A certain former Presidential candidate is going to be upset again...
A certain former Presidential candidate is going to be upset again, along with all his reich wing buddies. That is unless he's changed his mind once again.

7. McCain might not be as nuts as he was on the campaign trail
but was coached to act that way so the know-nothings would come out to vote for him.

In any case, I know a lot of younger GOPpies who aren't buying into the horseshit their parents pushed. They're GOP and wrong about how an economy works, but they're not stupid, in other words.

After a few years of Democratic rule, we might see a GOP with the old guard died off or in nursing homes and the rank and file returned to a semblance of sanity.

It's either that or they'll go the way of the Whigs.

2. It may happen one day once people of her generation control
the GOP.

But no time soon, that's for sure.

Why not join the party that already fights for what you believe in??

9. She's probably like my stepdad
He's fully convinced Dems are going to steal his money.

However, he's pro-gay and women's rights, pro-environment and anti-war.

24. She needs to be able to count the houses, first.
That's apparently a problem in the McCain household.

Not that the Repubs have been fiscally conservative in recent years, but they claim to be.

18. That's how it starts.
I was the same way when I turned 18. Comes from having Republican parents during the Clinton years, I suppose. That was until I realized that the "fiscal conservatives" were running on a myth.

She'll come around. Maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow, maybe not until her dad's retired, but someday.

6. Dear Meghan,
They never will. Get used to it.
The more you talk, the more I realize you're clueless about the party you're latched onto.

Sincerely, HKC

10. When Republican oppose gay civil rights its because they are bigots.
When Democrats do it, its for political reasons.

20. She is the most dangerous republican of them all
You just have to read the posts about her on liberal blogs. She is the public relations wing of the new republican party. That is the face of the GOP coming back in 2012. Her job is to make them look same and normal.

Looks like she's ripe for a little painful self-discovery.
