Deputy back at work after GVSU student shooting
Associated Press
West Olive --An Ottawa County sheriff's deputy accused of shooting an unarmed Grand Valley State University student during the execution of a search warrant at the student's off-campus apartment is back on the job.
Thirty-seven-year-old Ryan Huizenga was arraigned Monday in a Holland courtroom on a misdemeanor charge of careless discharge of a firearm.
The student was shot in the chest on March 11 but is recovering.
Huizenga initially was put on paid leave but then was placed on unpaid leave last week before returning to work Tuesday performing administrative duties.
Undersheriff Gregory Steigenga says Huizenga was reinstated because it could take a long time for the case to wind its way through the court system.
