This is a hell of a website; let me tell you about two birds I have. I, or I should say we, have two pearl Guineas. Guineas are a breed of bird shaped something like a football, the size of a chicken, which a head similar to a buzzard. If you have female Guineas they will lay eggs of course but after eating them for breakfast exactly once I can tell you that they are as objectionable in texture as a Goose egg - another product of nature I would not recommend. We have no females.
We began with 15 Guineas of mixed sex but by the time they fledged (grew feathers) we were down to 13. My son was left to tend the flock two years ago when my wife and I took off to the beach - on our return we were left with the two birds we have now.
Both the surviving birds are male and right now they are fighting like life itself was involved. I believe its triggered by the lengthened daylight period as summer approaches. Little chicken-like gonads a swelling for sure and the birds peck, chase, and kick imaginary spurs into each other in continuous conflict.
I was watching them out the window and I thought how much they are like the good folks at this website. Those two birds have everything in the world in common with each other. They were born on the same day, have unlimited access to good food and water, are protected day and night for an serious harm, and have free range to run around here anywhere they want. Field or woods, in the yard or in the garden, we put up with them. And still, those two silly birds fight. Not only do they fight, but they fight over the one thing that neither of them can possibly ever have. They are fighting for the privilege to mate with a female Guinea that simply does not exist.
