“10 years later, the real story behind Columbine” did Bowling for Columbine tell the complete story?
“10 years later, the real story behind Columbine” (USA Today)

The two teenagers who killed 13 people and themselves at suburban Denver's Columbine High School 10 years ago next week weren't in the "Trenchcoat Mafia," disaffected videogamers who wore cowboy dusters. The killings ignited a national debate over bullying, but the record now shows Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold hadn't been bullied — in fact, they had bragged in diaries about picking on freshmen and "fags."

* * * * * * * * * * * *

"These are not ordinary kids who were bullied into retaliation," psychologist Peter Langman writes in his new book, Why Kids Kill: Inside the Minds of School Shooters. "These are not ordinary kids who played too many video games. These are not ordinary kids who just wanted to be famous. These are simply not ordinary kids. These are kids with serious psychological problems."

* * * * * * * * * * * *

Langman, whose book profiles 10 shooters, including Harris and Klebold, found that nine suffered from depression and suicidal thoughts, a "potentially dangerous" combination, he says. "It is hard to prevent murder when killers do not care if they live or die. It is like trying to stop a suicide bomber."

What's now beyond dispute — largely from the killers' journals, which have been released over the past few years, is this: Harris and Klebold killed 13 and wounded 24, but they had hoped to kill thousands.

Looks like society was lucky the pair were so inept an making IED.

Will those who want to commit mass murder and then suicide turn to IED rather than guns to kill more innocent people?

1. That's my least favorite Michael Moore movie
Full of holes, incomplete stories, demagoguery and a disingenuous hit job on Charlton Heston.

2. I agree completly...
And to try and make a connection between Lockheed Martin and the two nut jobs was just beyond the "WTF" realm...

9. I especially liked them showing (zooming) on the banner
about FOD (Foreign Object Damage) like it was something sinister. I'm still amazed that documentary got away with what it did.

12. I sat next to some Columbine survivors at the premier of "Farenheit 9/11"
they were both extremely happy with "Bowling for Columbine". They told me that MM had been very supportive and helpful to them through the years and both said they thought he got the story right while they had been let down by other journalists.

It's been a while since I've seen the movie, so I can't comment on any inaccuracies or quirks, but I wanted to share this story. To say they were appreciative of Moore's work would be an understatement. They were literally both in tears while recollecting their involvement with him.

4. I've gotta admit, however...
BFC did a great job of shedding light on the hysterical tendencies of American media and how they're always blowing stuff out of context.

Not exactly happy with the interview with Charlton Heston - Moore was too confrontational, even if one did think Heston was being a butthead. But the rest of the movie provides some serious food for thought.

16. To be fair, that was pretty much the point of the movie.

The media focused on things like trench coats, video games and the music they listened to (i.e. Marilyn Manson) when those things really had nothing more to do with what happened than...well...bowling.

To assert that bowling had anything to do with what happened in Columbine is intentionally absurd. But so are practically all of the other things which people tried to pin down as a cause of what happened in Columbine.

The thing with Heston? Meh. The arrogant blowhard pretty much marched himself into that embarrassment. He thought at first he was talking to someone of a like mind. He only got miffed when he realized he wasn't.

Very true. The only way to stop someone intent on killing you is to physically stop them. That means you
had best be prepared to not be outgunned. Unless you have lived through it, you will never understand.

14. I'm reading the book "Columbine" by Cullen.
It is graphic, disturbing, informative and riveting. There is so much misinformation about Columbine.
