Two Gloucester, Massachusetts, brothers have been charged with beating another man outside a bar over the weekend. The victim's family is calling this a hate crime.
Prosecutors have confirmed that this is an open, active investigation and are looking into whether hate crime charges should be added.
23-year-old Jonathan Chadwick and his 21-year-old brother, William, have been charged with assault and battery.
They attacked Justin Goodwin of Salem, causing severe injuries to his face.
Prosecutors say it happened just after midnight Saturday morning outside the Old Timers Tavern in Gloucester.
His family and friends say they are convinced Goodwin was attacked because he was gay.
The two brothers are currently being held without bail, at least until April 24th, when a dangerousness hearing has been scheduled.
Defense attorneys are trying to classify this as a mere barroom brawl.
