Susan Boyle - OMG

Not exactly political, but what a voice. I can't stop watching this video. Just goes to show you, you can't judge a book by the cover. Definitely worth a listen. I am routing for her all the way!

28. Well, it's the whole thing -
she's obviously shy, but she's also confident and a bit saucy, but your heart goes out to her, doesn't it, just on the basis of her dear, dowdy look.

And the smirks on those faces when she's answering the judges' questions - I wanted to smack every one of them.

But, when she started, it was all over (I'm getting chills just thinking of it as I write this).

She's like no one I've ever seen. I hope she makes it so big!

15. The lyrics are beatiful and quite apropos for her life story.

I dreamed a dream in time gone by
When hope was high
And life worth living
I dreamed that love would never die
I dreamed that God would be forgiving.

Then I was young and unafraid
And dreams were made and used
And wasted
There was no ransom to be paid
No song unsung
No wine untasted.

But the tigers come at night
With their voices soft as thunder
As they tear your hope apart
As they turn your dream to shame.

And still
I dream he'll come to me
That we will live the years together
But there are dreams that cannot be
And there are storms
We cannot weather...

I had a dream my life would be
So different form this hell I'm living
so different now from what it seemed
Now life has killed
The dream I dreamed.

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=389x5452846.

Great links on that thread

Her voice is one thing but it is her 'ordinaryness' that I love most of all.
That and the fact that she cared for her sick mother and this was her first performance since her mother's death.

She's already in talks with Sony.
http://www.vancouversun.com/travel/Susan+Boyle+Unemployed+year+virgin+becomes+overnight+music+superstar/1499478/story.html
<snip>

All of this fuss must be difficult to comprehend for the youngest of nine children who had given up a potential singing career to look after her sick mother, but it's just beginning. Boyle will be back for the second round of the series, which she's currently rated at odds of 5/2 of winning by UK bookmakers.

36. Susan Boyle could have been another Marnie Nixon
Marnie Nixon was the beautiful voice behind many studio stars who could not actually sing, the most famous case being Audrey Hepburn in My Fair Lady as well as Deborah Kerr in The King and I and Natalie Wood in West Side Story. But, that era is probably passed.

We rarely make musicals anymore for the big screen and probably aren't as forgiving as 50's and 60's audiences of "stars" having their voices dubbed in.

She could still be a great concert vocalist or the voice behind animation musicals or a commercial singer. She has a great talent that should not go to waste.

So this is what these shows are about?

I gotta be honest-- I've never watched this or the American version As a matter of fact, I've made a point to avoid them. But if this kind of... drama(?) is not an aberration, I may have to re-evaluate my snobbish position and actually watch an episode or two.

Although the sound isn't very clean, she sounds almost as good as the original soundtrack to the musical. 'zounds! She was a) unexpected b) wonderful c) a five-minute Rocky Balboa movie.

And I suppose that douche of a judge is the "Simon" everyone's always going on about? Quite the jerk it would seem.

Thanks for the link! Loved it!

And he is indeed an asshole, until she opened her mouth and started singing. You don't often get something like that on any of those shows. But every once in a while, something like this pops up, and this one is heartwarming. They have done interviews with her and her phone hasn't stopped ringing. I think she has already been offered a contract by Sony.

44. Yes--last year on _America's Got Talent_ (the USA version of the same show)
Edited on Wed Apr-15-09 07:04 PM by tblue37
a very overweight insurance salesman who told about being mocked his whole life for being fat then stunned the judges and the audience with a beautiful opera performance. He ended up winning the whole shebang. Neal Boyd. Here he is:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MJfDp2qv598&feature=PlayList&p=9A55F0FB410D57E1&playnext=1&playnext_from=PL&index=9

Every year there are such surprises--usually more than one, too. Sometimes there is so much genuine talent tucked into an otherwise ordinary person that it's hard to choose who should win. The year before, a friggin' ventriloqist won--and absolutely deserved to! He proved that when performed by a master, ventriloquism is nothing less than an art. His name is Terry Fator. Here he is doing Roy Orbison's "Crying":

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WKmqS83aYTE

I am a bit snobbish myself in some ways, I guess, especially about reality shows, but I find I can't resist America's Got Talent.

Oh, and last year a middle-aged African-American woman, a mother who had raised her kids alone in desperate poverty and given up her chance at a singing career to do so, also gob-smacked the judges with her voice and her stage presence.

109. Last year a fabulous dancing kid, George Sampson, won...
The British show, that is. Similar story of poverty and sheer determination. The year before when he was 13 he was on the show but didn't make it to the semi-finals, but he practiced hard bucked up and tried again the next year and ended up winning. He's not the greatest dancer I've ever seen by a long shot, but without a doubt the most moving in that he clearly puts his entire heart and soul into it... it's almost as though the audience isn't there. Simon even called him the "Rocky" of dancing. I'm hoping the same for Susan Boyle... I just love an underdog.

This is his semi-finals routine. He did the same routine for the final in which he won, but nothing beats the shock and awe of the first time performance...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lQIHlcMZf3w&feature=related

This is the one where he wins the competition...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8ucMjonJ7Gw&feature=related

I just love the sincerity and determination of this kid!

118. When I was in DCI in 1994, there was an age limit of 14-22, I think.
Drum Corps International. The point of the age limit in that activity, as it was explained to me at the time, was specifically to avoid the involvement of professional musicians. It's supposed to be an amateur activity, hence the age limit. They actually wanted those who were younger and less experienced.

And, if you've ever been to or seen a DCI show, it's simply amazing. I'm thinking these shows are trying to accomplish the same thing; you people are assumed to be not "in the field" as of yet.

As for Susan, I don't even like this kind of music, and I love her performance! In terms of the whole "judging a book by its cover" lesson, I don't think she's unattractive at all. Not a supermodel, sure, but she looks fine. And you just have to love her personality and her dream-come-true life story. I think even if nothing else ever came of her appearance on the show, it seemed like her goal was to go out on the stage and give an absolutely amazing performance (you could see how she started to walk away after she was done) - and all other accolades are just icing on the cake.

Hope this is the start of a new career for her!

But thanks to places like DU and You Tube we don't have to watch, we don't miss a thing. :)

Having my cake and eating it too. I wish Miss Boyle well with her dream.

41. Didn't you just love the way the mocking audience at first just looked stunned,
and then, barely seconds into her song, leapt to their feet to give her an ovation, because they couldn't wait to express their utter delight at this amazing, delightful surprise.

I loved the looks on all the judges faces, too, especially Simon's.

performance:

In a press statement, producer Cameron Mackintosh has echoed the comments of judges Simon Cowell, Piers Morgan and Amanda Holden, saying, "Just like the judges and audience I was gob-smacked by the emotional powerhouse performance of Susan Boyle's show stopping rendition of 'I Dreamed a Dream.' Vocally it is one of the best versions of the song I've ever heard. Touching, thrilling and uplifting. I do hope she gets to sing it for the Queen."

http://www.playbill.com/news/article/128284.html

I love stories like this. I also watched this video like 10 times today. Her interpretation of the song is so emotionally mature it's just awe-inspiring.

Edited to add I can't help but wish her mother was here to see this, but I hope Susan is reveling in the the praise.

51. Lyrics....

I dreamed a dream in time gone by
When hope was high
And life worth living
I dreamed that love would never die
I dreamed that God would be forgiving

Then I was young and unafraid
And dreams were made and used and wasted
There was no ransom to be paid
No song unsung, no wine untasted

But the tigers come at night
With their voices soft as thunder
As they tear your hopes apart
And they turn your dreams to shame

And still I dream he'd come to me
That we will live the lives together
But there are dreams that cannot be
And there are storms we cannot weather

I had a dream my life would be
So different from this hell I'm living
So different now from what it seemed
Now life has killed the dream I dreamed.

62. I read a comment on one of the articles
from a person whose husband teaches middle school. She said that he played the clip for his classes today and that they had a discussion about prejudging and underestimating people.

The comments make me tear up just as much as the video - so many people who have hearts, who care, who take time and effort to write eloquent and loving messages.

but I was amazed at their reactions. My students are between 18 and 25. I told them bullies only win if they let them kill their dreams.
One young man told me today that he sent it to his mother and grandmother and both nearly dropped dead since they were in shock that he actually watched Susan Boyle. He said they were thrilled.

inspirational - on many levels; but also the condescending mia culpas given by the judges is gratifying per social commentary on our times.

I just loved it. She is amazing. If you look at the video closely, between 1:50 and 1:54, she gives this tiny little all knowing smile of no fear and that the audience is going to be slapping their jaws with their own hands in disbelief. I admit spending over an hour watching her performance, I need help.!! Wonderful!!

114. Singer Susan Boyle Gets To Chat With Patti LuPone, Who First Did Hit "I Dreamed A Dream" (video)
(CBS) Susan Boyle says her out-of-nowhere success is "breathtaking, unbelievable, awesome!"

In an interview on The Early Show Thursday, Boyle admitted it "hasn't really sunk in yet."

And little did she know that the broadcast would put her in touch with Tony Award winner and Broadway legend Patti LuPone, who first did the hit that made Boyle famous, overnight.
