Banker linked to 1980s S&L scandal dies after jumping off Tampa International Airport garage

(snip)

TAMPA — One of the leading figures of the savings and loan scandal of the 1980s jumped to his death from a parking garage at Tampa International Airport last week.

Wise was a former Kansas clothing salesman who became best known as the chairman of Silverado Banking in Denver, where Neil Bush (brother of former President George W. Bush and former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush) was one of the directors and former Tampa Palms developer Kenneth Good was a major borrower. The institution's collapse in 1988 cost taxpayers $1 billion.

He moved on to Aspen, where he was accused of stealing $8.7 million from investors in a mortgage business, Cornerstone Private Capital. He pleaded guilty in 1999 and was sentenced to three years in federal prison in Leavenworth, Kan.

After being released, Wise went to work for Nations Holding Co., a Kansas company that owns CFIC Home Mortgage.

2. Everyone has a right to suicide, but if you do it on someone else's property in a way
that causes a clean up shouldn't the estate have to reimburse them for that?

7. I also believe in a personal right to suicide.
In this case, I'm not sure it applies.

10. I Wonder If There Were Any Video Camera's On Site?........
or did the tapes go blank - you know - accidentally erased? Or was this guy smart enough to pick a place where there were no cameras.

I would like to get more details behind this - why was he at the airport? Was he going somewhere or coming back. Where? What has be been doing?

I think this warrants some investigative reporting.

12. I read in another story....
sorry can't find it today.. that yes there were witnesses who saw him jump. Reportedly he drove a rental car to the top level of the parking garage, got out and spent a little while pacing back and forth then jumped over the railing. He died enroute to the hospital I think it said. There was no luggage in the car nor did he have a plane ticket.

I saw first hand the devastation that Neil and Mr. Wise wrought at Silverado. Hundreds/thousands lost their houses and life savings and Neil and Wise skipped away with little more than a handslap. I hope that his conscience finally got to him.

Oh another thing I found interesting in the article was that it was while he was in prison that he hooked up with the Florida company he'd been working for.

14. Strange that he picked a Tampa airport parking garage...
The Sunshine Skyway Bridge is a much more popular spot to jump from in Tampa Bay.

The sunshine skyway bridge
at the mouth of tampa bay, on the west coast of florida,
is the attraction of choice for many contemplating life's self end.
it's the #4 suicide bridge in the country, #1 east of the mississippi.

6. Shouldn't there be a law against a person convicted of a financial crime
that they could not be in a position to run or manage a financial institution?
