What's so radical about progress?
With all of the political furor coming from the right these days, culminating in the recent “tea party” events promoted faithfully by the likes of Savage, Limbaugh, Hannity, Beck, etc…(grassroots movement my ass) I think it is a good time to discuss a few points. For starters, what is it that conservatives actually want to conserve? Like any good American I believe that our Constitution is a remarkable document and should be upheld as the backbone of our Republic. With that being said however, I think it is ridiculous to assume that every aspect of a document written centuries ago would be applicable to today’s society. In this respect the conservative movement is counter-productive in that they fail to realize that change is inevitable. Like a drip on your kitchen sink faucet, change can be slowed, but not stopped. Any attempt to conform today’s society to the values of old tired and worn out ideas must be met with great contempt. So I ask what is it that conservatives actually want to conserve? Could it be the existence of a system that not only allows a considerable amount of unnecessary inequality but actually advocates such inequality by the logic that drives the theory (free market capitalism) Could it be the disenfranchisement of minorities and other “fringe” groups such as gays ? Could it be the exploitation of their talents by corporate fat cats who’d rather vacation while people in the world starve? Could it be unfettered militarism that props up America on a pedestal while totally disregarding any semblance of international law (thus making events such as 9/11 all but inevitable)? Feel free to interject at any time here…What in the HELL is it that these people are so worked about and want to conserve? How is it that every time I turn of FUX (fox) News I AM the one they call radical? I might very well be crazy, but in my opinion a belief that the government owes it’s citizens a few basic rights (such as well I don’t know maybe just the bare necessities to life for crying out loud) isn’t radical at all. In fact it’s the only logical “enlightened” argument. I’m proud to be a radical if it means I’m against attacks on privacy such as anti-gay and anti-abortion activist. I’m proud to be a radical if it means I support at the very least free ADEQUATE education, healthcare, shelter and food to EVERY American citizen. I’m proud to be a radical if it means I believe the War on drugs is a failure. I’m proud to be a radical if it means I believe that the assertion “equality of opportunity does not equate to equality of results” is complete bullshit in light of the fact under our capitalist system equality of opportunity is non existent! I’m proud to be a radical if it means that I believe America is great, however, so is Humanity! I’m proud to be a radical if it means I believe it is not up to America to rule the world but to find it’s proper place within it. I’m proud to be a radical if it means I find War barbaric and disgusting. I’m proud to be a radical if it means I believe that after 8 years of George W. Bush Republicans should be permanently banned from holding office by Congress (do it now while we have the votes please lol) while we move to a one party system ran by the democratic or socialist party. I’m proud to be rad…*cough* I mean normal.
