1. I'm surprised they didn't go all out with an Islamic Caliphate
Since that seems to be the big fear card for the Freeper set

9. Other equally viable approaches would include America taken over by 1) Somali teenagers, 2) ...
Edited on Thu Apr-16-09 03:30 PM by Bucky
2) Iraqi orphans, 3) Mexican narcobandits (using machine guns disguised as leaf blowers), 4) Iranian nuclear scientists, 5) Spanish human rights lawyers (movie tag line: "No one expected them!") or 6) Danish pot store owners (supported by 5th Columnists from NORML)

Of course they could always make the villains aliens and rename it "Independence Day 2"

10. With all the money China's invested in the American economy...
why on earth would they invade the United States? Wouldn't damage to the American economy spell out a massive depression and bankrupcy for the Chinese economy?

16. China? Balderdash. The REAL threat is
Edited on Thu Apr-16-09 03:09 PM by The Traveler
Luxembourg. Or to be more precise, The Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. First, clearly they haven't given up on monarchy, the atavistic bastards. Democracy is therefore anathema to them. Second, they want to plunder our remaining natural resources, like our land fills. And finally, they want to ravage our exotic women.

Luxembourg. The real threat. Don't worry about China. They already own our butts. And they already have lots of land fills.

18. I've never really understood the disdain for Red Dawn that I find on DU.
Judging the movie by its politics is nonsense - it has no politics. We never hear the Russian/Cuban/Nicaraguan invaders never spout any communist ideology. They could as easily be Nazis or Martians. It takes the fantasy of heroically resisting an invasion with guerrilla warfare and looks at what it really would be - it starts as an adventure, and only two of the kids survive. It shows the Nicaraguan commander's dilemma at having moved from a guerrilla himself to being the authoritarian occupier. It reflects the reality of dealing with informers and opportunists. Sure, the Russian 'hunter' brought in to track down the wolverines is a bit cartoonish, but many of the other characters were well drawn and well acted.

I've seen criticism of 'why would the Reds invade a small town in Colorado?' - well, I'm sure there are plenty of Iraqis and Afghanis wondering what Americans are doing in their small towns. Maybe it's at a critical crossroad that needed to be controlled, or maybe it cut a vital rail line. For story purposes, it makes no difference. It's all part of the story line, where an overwhelming event overtakes small-town family life.

I, for one, would be curious about a remake.

19. Yes, it makes a very good point: if you're invaded, it's easy to become a "terrorist"
Edited on Thu Apr-16-09 03:26 PM by TexasObserver
The film was praised by Ronnie Reagan, who saw it only in the context of Commies v. Americans. That's likely why it is often panned by folks who might otherwise see its revolutionary aspects.

I thought it a worthy film, which showed how ordinary boys and girls become "terrorists" fighting invading forces. The most important line was when one of the Wolverines asked "what's the difference between us and them?" The answer was "WE LIVE HERE!"

When you invade other countries, you create those kind of fighters, and they will fight 'til the death, because they live there.
