In Texas, 31% Say State Has Right to Secede From U.S., But 75% Opt To Stay

Friday, April 17, 2009

Thirty-one percent (31%) of Texas voters say that their state has the right to secede from the United States and form an independent country.

However, the latest Rasmussen Reports poll in the state finds that if the matter was put to a vote, it wouldn’t even be close. Three-fourths (75%) of Lone Star State voters would opt to remain in the United States. Only 18% would vote to secede, and seven percent (7%) are not sure what they'd choose.

Texas Governor Rick Perry, in response to a reporter’s question about secession at a protest "tea party," said Wednesday, "We've got a great union. There's absolutely no reason to dissolve it. But if Washington continues to thumb their nose at the American people, you know, who knows what might come out of that? But Texas is a very unique place, and we're a pretty independent lot to boot." The comment was widely reported in the media.

8. And he only "won" with 39% of the vote
Don't count us out. We need more support from everyone to get rid of these knuckledraggers.

14. We're getting closer than you may like to believe
In the 2004 presidential election, the Texas breakdown was thus:

61.08% Bush/Cheney
38.22% Kerry/Edwards

Compare that to this last 2008 presidential election:

55.45% McCain/Palin
43.68% Obama/Biden

As for the Texas 2006 gubernatorial election, it broke down like this:

39.02% Rick Perry
29.78% Chris Bell
18.11% Carole Keeton Strayhorn
12.44% Richard "Kinky" Friedman
0.60% James Werner
0.01% James "Patriot" Dillon

We may not take the Governor's office this next election but I can practically guarantee you that Rick Perry will not survive the upcoming GOP primary against Kay Bailey Hutchinson.

18. I'm no fan of Hutchison's either
But if her getting in is the price of having Perry out, I'd hold my nose and pay it.
The best news would be for Kinky to cut the shit out altogether and give the Democratic
nominee a fighting chance to take back the Statehouse while the Republicans are still in
national disarray, but that may just be pie in the sky. I can't vote in the Republican
primary anyway, so that one will be a spectator sport for me no matter what the outcome.

6. Somebody polled this? That's treason, it's unamerican, it's you're either
with us or against us. It's not support our troops or god bless america.

How can the Texans claim to be both more american than the rest of us and still want to leave the country, at the same time?

This is insane, totally.

7. It's only 18% of Texans
and I find it interesting that only 31% believe the myth that Texas has a right to secede.

9. Aw, This Can't Be Right.

Everybody knows that the entire population of Texas---every single man, woman and child---is just a bunch of ignorant, redneck, gun-hugging, bible-thumping, death penalty worshiping, inbred, knuckle-dragging, far-right wing subhumans, ready to nominate Dubya for sainthood while simultaneously taking up arms against the Union. I mean, that's the impression you get from daily Texas-hating threads here at DU.....

buy into the ridiculous stereotypes. So much for this so-called "high minded" crowd.

10. Breakup of the USA??
Less than 20 years after the breakup of the USSR? I wouldn't rule it out. Maybe then some funny Russian can pretend to be from
Texas and act like an ass as he travels across Russia.

17. So, 31% are not educated in Texas history and 18% are just plain stupid
That's actually pretty good all things considered.

19. Not bad at all, really
18% of the Texas population being crazier than shithouse rats is probably lower than the national average. 31% not knowing basic history is also probably better than the national average.

All said, this news has increased my respect for the average Texan
