Vatican deplores censure of pope on condoms
Accuses Belgium of trying 'to intimidate' the pontiff with resolution on AIDS

VATICAN CITY - The Vatican on Friday deplored a Belgian parliamentary resolution condemning Pope Benedict for saying that the use of condoms could worsen the spread of AIDS.

The Vatican, in a statement, said the criticism of the pope had been inappropriate and added that "some groups" had used the episode in an attempt "to intimidate" the pontiff and stop him from speaking out about Church teachings.

The pope's controversial remarks last month provoked widespread criticism in the press and by health officials and politicians in Europe, but the Belgian censure was the first time a diplomatic protest had been made against the Vatican.

2. this isn't about "church teachings"
it's about BLATANT LYING.

If he said the devil loves condoms, fine. Whatever. Still stupid, but whatever. But condoms DO NOT SPREAD AIDS. What the hell?

4. Well
If Belgium doesn't get the pox or disappear, there will be more free thinking all over Europe.

Good for them.

19. Well, it was inappropriate from """their"""" viewpoint!
And they think, falsely, that they are the biggest gorillas in the room.

6. The Vatican can't have it all ways.
If they are going to take positions that have an impact in the secular world, they can't expect to be held as beyond criticism as a faith outfit.

7. Tough shit
Maybe the Vatican should stay out of matters it obviously knows so little about, meaning sexual matters.

The censure of the Vatican didn't kill anybody. The Vatican's position on condoms in epidemic AIDS areas in Africa is killing people.

"Sanctity of life," my flabby old Irish ass.

8. That statement of Benedict's was
one of the most irresponsible that I've ever heard come from the mouth of a world leader. Good for the Belgians for calling him on it.

9. Oh the irony of the Vatican complaining about intimidating other leaders!
 When how many politicians here have been threatened with no communion and possibly excommunication for being pro-choice?

14. How about a "mail the Vatican a condom" day?
What would they do with a bazillion condoms? Could be interesting and well publicize their hypocrisy and the stupidity of Ratzie's comments.

17. The Pope made a very dangerous and absurd statement, which
has nothing in common with the teachings of Jesus Christ. He deserves censure.

20. The pope should be called out when he says idiotic things.
Which he does a lot. Fuck them if they don't like it. People who live in the real world know that his statement is ludicrous.
