Unemployed Turn To Armed Forces
Unemployed Turn To Armed Forces
Standards Rise As More Potential Recruits Seek Steady Work

Local armed forces recruiters are finding their jobs easier to do in the wake of the current economy crisis.

Staff Sgt. Cindy Hernandez said her job as an air force recruiter sells itself. She said she does not have to look for recruits; they come to her.

"We have a lot of people just coming in with bachelor's degrees just trying to enlist, trying to join the Air Force for that job security," Hernandez said.

Hernandez said the new recruits are no longer just recent high school graduates; now she is seeing an older generation of unemployed professionals desperate for steady work. The Air Force's new recruit age limit is 28 and Hernandez said she has had to turn people away for being too old.

In March, the Army, Navy, Marine Corps and the Air Force combined were able to recruit 14,000 new soldiers, a 2,000-person increase from March 2007.

2. I'd rather work a McJob than join the military.
Too many strings attached when you try to leave them.

3. That's because it's so much more fair to coerce people economically ... in a capitalist culture.
God forbid we have a universal service obligation ... then what would our affluence be worth?

7. My friend's son just graduated from basic in the Coast Guard.
He doesn't want to work at Gamestop for the rest of his life, but the family doesn't have money for college. So he took the path that's least likely to lead to the Middle East.

My nephew leaves next month for the Marines. He's going in because he got laid off and can't find another job that'll give him 40 hours (he works retail).
