Dispatches from an Alternate Universe

Here's David Rivkin's take on the torture memos, posted at The Corner:

The conclusions OLC memos reach — that the specific interrogation techniques used by the CIA did not constitute torture — are eminently reasonable. To any fair-minded observer, these memoranda definitively establish that the Bush Administration did not engage in torture. In short, these memos go a long way towards rebutting shrill and unfair attacks on the integrity of Bush Administration officials, and, more generally, on America's honor.

And did I mention that up is down, black is white, and Vice President Palin has been doing a splendid job in office so far?

1. To all those who claim it's not torture, I say YOU try it!

4. And don't forget
All the right wing talking heads who say it wasn't torture. They should all give it a try also, and then tell us all what that it was "not" torture! Let Rush go first!

8. The thing is, it's probably not half as terrifying when done like that...
as it is when someone is actually forcing you to do it against your will.

Just try to hold your breath. As I understand it, the same reason you can't hold your breath is the same reason that waterboarding feels like drowning, it's because your body builds up CO2.

It's the difference between holding your breath, and being able to control it, or having someone suffocate you. The panic these people must feel has to be awful.

We all need to fight against this, because if they use on these guys, they may use it on one of us one day.

3. And Brownie did a heckuva job too.
These guys are using P.R. spin in trying to turn shit in to sirloin.

I thought the two *guest political analysts both from the Washington Post on the Jim Lehrer News Hour last night going light on torture, they might as well have been on the same side on this issue.

Thanks for the thread, babylonsister.

Shields and Brooks were both off for the night.

7. Behind all this definition argument is did anyone have the authority
or right to change the rules and definitions?

The executive had his lawyers make up new law, and then use this as legitimatizing his actions.

An executive cannot change laws and treaties and the constitution in such a manner, right? This is an impeachable offense -breaking laws in a self-serving fashion and calling the lawbreaking now legal- and it should have been investigated accordingly.

President Obama has to be smarter than to say torture was legal at the time, and those following the law will not be prosecuted. All of them should be prosecuted. Leniency can be shown toward some if deserved.

11. This morning, George Will alluded to the "Unitary Executive" as the reasoning
giving them the right to change the rules and definitions while making up new law as a way to legitimize their actions.

He kept saying I don't agree with it but there are "intelligent" people that believe in the theory of the "Unitary Executive", he repeated that "intelligent people" phrase about three times.

As if "intelligence" by it's very self gives legitimacy to corruption of power, inhumane treatment of prisoners, and the shredding of the Constitution.

I have news for George Will, there are intelligent criminals out there and on top of that anyone believing that good can come from giving a single individual absolute power, clearly lacks wisdom if not intelligence. Even if a nation lucked out and ended up with a "benevolent or enlightened dictator," that never lasts and by giving up their own power, the people are totally at the mercy of fate with no control over their destiny.
