This has gone beyond ridiculous. I am looking for news about the torture documents and I see one Susan Boyle thread after another.

Is this a political discussion board or something else now?

And no I don't hate Susan Boyle. I just think there are lots more important things we should be focusing on.

1. The Administrators have provided you a means to take care of the issue yourself
Simply click that X next to any Susan Boyle thread, and you never need see them again.

That's why the X is there, so that people who don't want to see certain threads or threads on certain topics don't have to.

The OP of this thread is doing, with this thread, exactly what they're complaining about other people doing, and that little 'X' you mentioned is there precisely to avoid threads exactly like this one!

6. Sorry, but this is GD, General Discussion. Perhaps we need a midway discussion forum between this
and the Lounge or something else to accommodate your desires.

I hear what you say but I also think that Susan Boyle presents an interesting sociological and political issue, which is her physical type and her class. This can be very interesting and I am surprised that you haven't cottoned on to it.....

You know, as we used to say in the women's liberatation movement: the personal is the political.

Think about it...

Her success is one of the more uplifting things to read about these days. Not to insult DU, but damn, this is a message board. If doing something vital is your aim, step away from your 'puter and get out there in the real world and interact with real people. Do some volunteer work. The internets are merely a diversion, or means to organize activities to do in the real world. Nothing more.

Came home and Susan Boyle has taken over DU.

Same thing yesterday. Went to a meeting and came home and it was Susan Boyle everywhere.

It's been going on for days.

I would like to log in and read about something else. And in the grand scheme of things, this woman is not all that important.

I do lots of vital things. And I interact with people every day. Not much time to read the news so I like to find it here when I have time. But this weekend it's all about Susan Boyle. And it seems rather silly, IMO.

I don't understand the attraction of such frivolous, immaterial events. She's a moderately talented singer. The dog is furry. Wow. That's hugh!!

If someone started a thread about the NBA playoffs, it would be moved, as it should be. Why this tripe about Susan Boyle remains is anyone's guess.

Edited on Sat Apr-18-09 07:36 PM by Mike 03
discourse has touched on an important aspect of our shallowness as a society. That shallowness doesn't just have to do with Susan Boyle; it has to do with how we analyze, assess and judge damn near EVERYTHING.

IMO, the more time we spend analyzing our superficiality, the more quickly we can grow as a society into a peoples we can be proud of, instead of a constant, moronic embarrassment to ourselves.

30. in some respects, vocal talent is also superficial
it's similar to looks in that respect.

sure, somebody can hone their vocal talent, but a beautiful voice is just as much an accident of birth as a hawt looking face is.

in both cases, one can work to make one's body better, eat healthy, take care of one's skin, etc. just like one can hone one's voice presentation, but in some respects it's just as "superficial" to gush over a beautiful voice as a beautiful face.

me, i appreciate both.

they both bring me pleasure. and i am not going to get all high and mighty like a good voice is so exalted but looks are just superficial.

i played in bands throughout high school and college, and i know more than a few vacuous singers.

this woman seems like a nice person, and she has a great voice.

fantastic.

i'm not ashamed to admit that i can appreciate a beautiful body, a beautiful face, a beautiful soul, and a beautiful voice.

29. I try to root for people who have talent.
Edited on Sat Apr-18-09 07:53 PM by saltpoint
Susan Boyle has talent.

As she was first presented to an audience, she found herself the target of hooting and derision.

When she opened her mouth to sing, the hooting and derision stopped. It came to an end.

Her talent reminded anyone who hooted or derided her that physical personality is far less the point than inner beauty. This is the psychological hinge behind Anderson's 'Ugly Duckling' tale, in which an ugly duckling endures years of barnyard trauma only to glance down one afternoon on the lake to behold himself as a swan.

Her voice is that swan, and its reflection, that rises from Boyle's throat for the reconsideration of all the idiot pigs, chickens, and other animals who thought they had the right to dismiss her.

People tend to root for the good, and the good happened here.

73. I do too.
But I also can put this woman and her talent in perspective and not get my pants in a twist over it.

I just think this all goes to show just how fucking fatigued the world is with crisis after crisis after crisis. You can only take so much doom-and-gloom before you go insane. It's a nice story. It makes people smile. What's wrong with that? The world's shit isn't going away...it will be there once the shine comes off this story (and Bo's).

75. I think you are trying to distract from the Susan Boyle phenomenon
Nice try. It won't work. We will not be distracted by trivialities.
