4. She is a totally a corporate invention....as are 90% of all the 'stars' at this point.
I had hoped for a youtube revolution with new and complete artists like susan boyle.....

Could still happen.....

8. 90% of all stars have always been a corporate invention
Nostalgia often blinds people to the fact that there were just as many cookie-cutter pop acts in other decades as in this one.

22. Not so much.
At least not to me. Now bring up Carrie Underwood or Sara Evans and we can talk.

11. Well, you're wrong about that
Ms. Swift looks to be a dime a dozen.

As you've just exposed yourself to be. Nice job.

13. I like Taylor Swift.
She might not have a huge vocal range, but she can carry a tune well, she plays the guitar well, and her voice is very pleasant. What more do you want?

If people can't listen to music without criticizing the way the singers look then perhaps you shouldn't be watching the videos. Turn off the TV and just listen to the music.

15. video killed the radio star
Edited on Sun Apr-19-09 08:36 PM by paulsby
of course we still have decidedly non-commercial and even ugly as fuck groups like nickelback and tool who do quite fine, even in the age of video.

the ramones were always my fave band as a kid, and while they did look COOL, they hardly looked handsome and commercial.

ditto elvis costello

ok, marky ramone was kind of handsome, but...

but yea, looks matter. always have, always will. madonna didn't just build her empire on her voice (god forbid) but on personality, photogenicity (is that a word?) and her IMAGE.

16. It's interesting that the "unattractive" artists you mention are all men.
So apparently men can sing and be unattractive, but women are only allowed to sing if they are beautiful. Yup, that's an incredibly sexist double standard.

I still say turn off the television and just listen to the music. If people can't appreciate a woman's voice unless she's beautiful then they're not appreciating her voice.

17. no, it has to do with the fact that
Edited on Sun Apr-19-09 08:47 PM by paulsby
almost all of my favorite artists were/are men.

these are the bands i cut my teeth on:

U2, the police, sex pistols, social distortion, elvis costello, billy joel, johnny cochrane, big country, etc.

not a lot of wimmins there.

back in the day there were very few female BANDS. go go's and bangles come to mind.

i also dug polystyrene from x-ray specs. one of the best punk bands ever. WITH SAXOPHONE!

i am a guitarist, thus the bands i liked tend to have interesting guitar. i can't recall any bands from that era with kick-ass women guitarists.

i did dig the plasmatics, which had a lead female singer (wendy o williams), and still to this day LOVE pat benatar. her guitarist is her husband and extremely underrated at his craft

there have been some pretty good ones RECENTLY, though

20. actually, i really liked concrete blonde
who became famous with "joey" but had a lot of killer songs. "god is a bullet" is fricking great.

i have no idea what their female singer looks like, though

14. one can like both
i like taylor for her hawtness and her singin'

i like boyle for her singin' and her non-hawtness. it's refreshing in a joe cocker or nickelback fugly sort of way.

one doesn't have to think one is better than the other, or more exalted.

i can dig a tasty pop-country diva, as well as a boyle.

Taylor Swift-Breathe

I see your face in my mind as I drive away,
Cause none of us thought it was gonna end that way.
People are people,
And sometimes we change our minds.
But its killing me to see you go after all this time.

Mmm mmm mmm
Mmm mmm mmm mmm mmm
Mmm mmm mmm
Mmm mmm mmm mmm mmm

Music starts playin like the end of a sad movie,
Its the kinda ending you dont really wanna see.
Cause its tragedy and itll only bring you down,
Now I dont know what to be without you around.

And we know its never simple,
Never easy.
Never a clean break, noone here to save me.
Youre the only thing I know like the back of my hand,
And I cant,
Breathe,
Without you,
But I have to,
Breathe,
Without you,
But I have to.

Never wanted this, never wanna see you hurt.
Every little bump in the road I tried to swerve.
But people are people,
And sometimes it doesnt work out,
Nothing we say is gonna save us from the fall out.

And we know its never simple,
Never easy.
Never a clean break, no one here to save me.
Youre the only thing I know like the back of my hand,
And I cant,
Breathe,
Without you,
But I have to,
Breathe,
Without you,
But I have to.

Its two a.m.
Feelin' like I just lost a friend.
Hope you know its not easy,
Easy for me.
Its two a.m.
Feelin like I just lost a friend.
Hope you know this aint easy,
Easy for me.

And we know its never simple,
Never easy.
Never a clean break, noone here to save me.

Ohhh

I cant,
Breathe,
Without you,
But I have to,
Breathe,
Without you,
But I have to.

Sorry (oh) Sorry (mmm)
Sorry (eh eh) Sorry (mmm)
Sorry (eh eh) Sorry (mmm)
Sorry
