Be careful about getting swept up in this Susan Boyle mania, it could all be a hoax
Edited on Sun Apr-19-09 06:45 AM by Cali_Democrat
Remember Milli Vanilli? It was felt that the vocals behind Milli Vanilli lacked a marketable image.

But there's obviously nothing marketable about Susan Boyle's image, at least not at first glance.

Maybe we're seeing a different kind of Milli Vanilli, a kind of reverse Milli Vanilli if you will. One where the powers that be put an unattractive person out there, a person that ordinary people fawn over because they "identify" with her and she's an underdog.

But the real person behind the vocals is a gorgeous 25 year old that looks like Giselle Bundchen.

It's a brilliant idea when you think about it. Plus the You Tube video just seems so contrived to me.

Somewhere Simon Cowell is smiling like a Cheshire Cat right now and so many are lapping it up.

2. conspiracies everywhere.
I'm certainly not caught up in this business. I'm just not interested but I doubt that you're on to anything. After all, from what I've heard, she's been singing for quite a while locally.

3. oh spare me
She was not lip-synching. Anybody who knows anything about singing could see that. If not on the video due to blurriness on a small screen, then on teevee when she sang live on good morning America and could be seen up close and personal without a mike. She even had full control of her tongue, which was shaped like a perfect little basin and never left the bottom of her mouth, so as to maximize resonance. Not to mention always open vowels and good diction, both in the initial consonents and, more important, in the ending consonents that so many *even some so-called pros* often lose.

Furthermore, her cd of "Cry Me a River" demonstrates very well developed technique, beautiful tonality, good musicianship and a lot of the nuances, such as portamento singing (versus swooping), that non-singers are oblivious too.

Is the teevee program a set up to make money off of nobodies from nowhere? Of course.

So the fuck what? If it gives nobodies from nowhere an opportunity they would not have had otherwise, what the fuck is wrong with that?

Get off your high horse. You haven't got a clue of what you're writing about.

4. If it wer ea hoax, it's be the end of the careers for those involved, and they might go to jail
Seriously. British TV has had a series of scandals involving programmes with phone-in votes (like closing the voting, but still telling people to phone in to the premium-rate voting lines), and the fines have already been in the hundreds of thousands of pounds, and people have been sacked. The presenters of Britain's Got Talent, Ant and Dec, were the presenters of one of the fined programmes, and got away with it by the skin of their teeth. Another fraud, on an even bigger scale, involving many people already (eg all the people where she comes from) isn't feasible - they'd know they'd be fined millions, and would risk jail.

It wouldn't be worth it for them.

I think I should point out this is far more talked about on DU than it is in Britain. Simon Cowell didn't know DUers would go gaga for a middle-aged Scottish woman who can sing. He was just out to make another record deal.

I hadn't seen the article you're referring to until you just pointed it out.

Although I think my claim is much more detailed. That NY Post article is just a general suspicion.

Actually another DU poster gave me the idea of Milli Vanilli.

it seems you are just throwing monkey feces at one of the few positive stories out there today--one that has given a lot of people room to cheer. I don't know why that always seems to be the case, but ok-- we were warned, since that seems to be so very important to you.

14. Hidden talent is not something new.....
We are conditioned to equate big recording contracts with the truly talented of our population. Anyone who has spent any time around music can point to hundreds of unknown musicians who can play rings around those who have broken through to the "popular" culture. It's like politics, sometimes the best seem to come out of nowhere !

Edited on Sun Apr-19-09 07:24 AM by Cali_Democrat
I don't listen to Bob Marley because I find him attractive.

I'm just very suspicious of these sudden pop culture phenomenons and this one takes the cake. I've never seen so many people get swept up so fast, in a matter of days and the media is bombarding us with Susan Boyle.

You can call me a cynic, but I consider myself cautious.

21. It's not. You do know she's "developmentally delayed?"
Lack of oxygen at birth. She was a poor student with 'learning disabilities' and was teased mercilessly as both a child and an adult.

She has one great talent. It's a remarkable one, too.

Simon is probably pulling his hair out thinking of the best way to market her--a little change, but not "too much."

22. I can confirm it is most definitely a hoax.
It's really me singing. That's right, it's me. But I am so freakin' frackin' drop dead gorgeous that it would be an irresponsible safety hazard to put me on TV. Fercryinoutloud, I went out in public a few weeks ago and they're still cleaning up the multicar pileup.

So they found someone who would be less dangerous but still interesting.

I hope this settles things once and for all.
