Limbaugh: "Torture works, look what it did to McCain"
Edited on Sun Apr-19-09 06:42 AM by sufrommich
Apparently,in the days before Google,it was impossible for the Vietnamese to "discover" the names of the Green Bay Packers without resorting to torture.

"Think Progress catches Rush Limbaugh making a specious argument involving John McCain and the North Vietnamese as proof that torture is effective in gathering intelligence. Limbaugh claims McCain acknowledged that torture works because he admitted that the Viet Cong "broke" him during his time as a captive."

1. Not the brightest of arguments giving some of the circumstances, but whatever...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_McCain

I hope any other US soldier that cracks under pressure won't be considered a traitor for breaking either...

Torture does seem to work. Unless you're the one tortured, you break and do what they say (which may or may not be what they want to know), and then everyone else calls you a traitor for breaking down, "death before dishonor", and the rest -- which Republicans are known to do.

Torture works...to provide propaganda material.
Doesn't mean it's useful information.

2. McCain is a text book example of how tortures DOES NOT work.
What did the Vietnamese get out of McCain? Propaganda films. Nothing more. They didn't get any truths. Torture is the best propaganda tool there is. But it certainly doesn't work if you need truthful information. The only time torture works in getting the truth, especially in that ticking time bomb scenario the wing-nuts like to use, is in the fictional story 24.

5. It doesn't really work as good propaganda. Who hasn't
watched a film of a soldier denouncing his country and become even angrier at the enemy for beating the soldier into submission. It has a counter effect that does not work to their advantage.

3. Turbineguy: "Oxycontin works, look at what it did to Limbaugh"
Although he did give it a head start.

4. Torture "taught" the North Vietnamese that the US Navy grew chickens on
aircraft carriers. They believed for a time that the collateral duty of a few of their captured pilots had to do with responsibilities associated with the "chicken farm."

Of course, if that were the case, it wouldn't have been Forrestal or Midway, it would have been...USS Purdue!

Limbaugh, once again, steps over the line. But it's getting tiresome. When you continually try to "outrage," you lose that capacity. Ask Ann "Been Around The Block One Time Too Many" Coulter.

6. Very true. Is Limbaugh still on Armed Forces Radio? I imagine a
lot of our soldiers aren't going to like the bashing Rush just gave them.

7. I don't know if he's on every day, but I imagine he's on a few times a week.
Funny thing, though--if people don't react to him, or react in muted, perhaps eye-rolling fashion, he'll feel the need to top himself before too long. He'll misread his "peeps," he'll say something that sickens even them. It always happens. The bigger they are (and oh, he's one big fat idiot) the harder they fall.

9. So Is Rushbo Saying McCain Gave Away Secrets?
Now didn't Gramps claim it was the Pittsburgh Steelers line that he had memorized. An amazing feat considering the "Steel Curtain" would play in the mid 70's after McCain's release, but he was obviously clarivoyant. So if he can't get that story straight (or more likely made the whole bullshit up) are we to believe there's any validity not only to what McCain says but, as usual, Rushbos credibility.

There has long been a controversy as to what McCain did or didn't do during his captivity. Last year, some posted some of these stories/claims that painted McCain as being a stoolie and when that came out, not only did the right wing howl (like they always do), but also the corporate media and even some folks here on DU. Seems like Rushbo may be validating that Gramps did crack...and with it, did it cost the lives of other POWs? Now does Rushbo want to open that can of worms?
