Profoundly moving stories of ordinary people doing extraordinary things.
Men and women with courage, a moral compass, great talent and skill used
to help others and move the planet forward.

No million dollar bonuses, no sense of entitlement.
Humble, modest, honest. Their gifts and inner resources used for the common good.

In marked contrast to the corrupt and greedy all around us
who brought the world to its knees.

The juxtaposition of light and dark will continue.
The stories will touch cords deep within the human psyche.

2. Something is definitely going on.
I sent this as part of my answer to my ex last night (a right winger trying to bait me by asking what I thought of 'Obama ordering the shooting of 3 black teenage Somali pirates'.)

...As for the pirates--it's a tragic situation. They're so young, but have become a menace in the past couple of years. They can make millions and gain prestige amongst their peers by pirating, or pretty much live in abject poverty and even starve. I know which way I'd go.

I thought President Obama's response was great, because without any bluster at all, he was working behind the scenes. He let the military do it's job, with the one constraint that they only shoot if the Captain's life was in danger. I'm pretty impressed by the SEALS. I know they're well-trained, but those were choppy seas, and they were wearing bulky night vision goggles.

The military came out looking really good, the Prez came out not looking weak on the sort of hairy situation that President's Carter and Clinton didn't have much luck with, which has been a constant source of fodder for some. And we have yet another selfless hero in Captain Phillips.

With all the depressing news these days, people are looking for uplifting stories that validate the best of humankind, rather than the worst. I am loving the Susan Boyle phenomenon. There are enough greedy, arrogant, hateful, wreckless, ignorant and self-serving people on the planet, so it's always good when talented, unassuming and competent people make the news. You know, everyday people one wouldn't normally notice, doing extraordinary things.

3. Yes, Navy seals, Captains Sullenburg and Phillips.
Examples of dedicated, hard working, every day people who do seemingly miraculous things, but are really the result of much hard work, courage, and dedication. They do so for ordinary pay, and do not expect or want fame/acclaim.

Boyle is in this group as well, not saving lives, but saving our souls. Helping us to be better people and touching the goodness in all of us. And bringing much needed joy and beauty to us. We are hungry for it.

We are a people starving for joy, beauty, courage, morality, goodness.
And overwhelmed when we hear stories of those with an inner richness doing the right thing.

5. Obama behind the scenes.
You are correct, much of Obama's work has always been behind the scenes.

And those who see Obama's civility as weakness will be sadly mistaken.

6. I wonder how 'up in arms' he is about all the teenagers being killed by cops in the 'war
on drugs'...does he REALLY care that much about black teenagers, or just an excuse to bash Obama? (I know the answer)
