GOP Leader Cites Cow Farts To Downplay Global Warming

Sam Stein
Boehner Cites Cow Farts To Downplay Global Warming (VIDEO at link)

04/19/09 12:10 PM

Minority Leader John Boehner described the overwhelming scientific consensus that carbon dioxide is contributing to climate change as "comical" during an appearance on Sunday, noting that cow flatulence contributes CO2 to the environment all the time.

Appearing on ABC's This Week, the Ohio Republican was asked what to describe the GOP plan to dealing with greenhouse gas emissions, "which every major scientific organization said is contributing to climate change."

Boehner replied: "The idea that carbon dioxide is a carcinogen that is harmful to our environment is almost comical. Every time we exhale, we exhale carbon dioxide. Every cow in the world, you know when they do what they do you've got more carbon dioxide."

3. These are the absurd arguments they use to divide us...
I just posted this in another thread, but I think it is relevant...

This topic is being used by the elite as another divide and conquer tactic
WE need to find a way to unite with the right. Whether or not they believe in global warming, we can all agree that pollution is bad. The Corporations need to be forced to do what is right for the global population no matter what!

Pollution from Corporations is the biggest cause of global warming. No amount of changing our lightbulbs or using less plastic or becoming vegetarians(I do all of these) can counter the amount of crap that is being dumped into the atmosphere by the corporations. This is why I do not trust Al Gore. For all of his talk about global warming, he is the one that pushed NAFTA and the WTO allowing our Corporations to go to other countries with no environmental regulations. How much sense does that make? The powers that be have everyone focused on the wrong thing, blaming ourselves and not the real polluters, and then they will use the issue to charge us for our carbon footprint. This is why I do not trust either party, and am forced to think for myself.

4. And some DUers do the same
to somehow justify their financial support of CAFOs and industrial animal commodification.

5. I may be out on a limb here-
But I've been reading for years that cow farts produce methane. Have they now started producing carbon dioxide instead? or in addition to? Or were all the previous posts and articles about cows farting methane faulty? Or is Boner just that dumb?

Wat

6. He's that dumb.
It's methane.

And it's not even actually the farts that produce the methane. That's just a cutesy way for people to marginalize the issue.

10. He is that dumb. His whole interview was cringe worthy. There was not
one lucid moment. I like him as the spokesman for the Republicans. The guy is crazier than Palin, but still not as crazy as Bachmann.

Cows produce methane, not CO2

Methane is a greenhouse gas, and a far more potent one than CO2. And I believe cows produce enough methane each year to cause more greenhouse effect than all the cars on earth do with their CO2. There are dozens of gases that affect our greenhouse effect. NF3 is used to make plasma TVs and is about 17000 more potent than CO2 as a greenhouse gas. There are serious concerns that as we make more plasma TVs that NF3 will start screwing up the atmosphere. I think we make 4,000 tons of NF3 but if it is 17000x more potent it is as damaging as 68 million tons of CO2. So the concept that CO2 is the only gas to focus on is something that needs to be changed.

However it is not impossible to fix. Give the cows different diets that don't contain lignin and some supplements to change their intestinal bacteria and the problem will go away. It is easy to solve. Not only that but in 5-10 years we will be able to buy hydroponic meats and avoid the issue of animal cruelty and methane production.

9. cows don't fart carbon dioxide
They fart methane gas, which is a worse (more persistant, longer breakdown time) greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide.

Which also means that our insistance on a high milk and red-meat diet contributes to greenhouse gas emissions.

I had to turn the teevee off this morning. The man's combined ignorance and stupidity was making my head want to explode. I started yelling at the teevee and puppy all upset.

12. While cows fart more than humans, by far the largest source of methane released into the atmosphere
is from termites.

13. Carcinogen? Who said anything about CO2 being a carcinogen?
And cows DON'T emit CO2. It's methane (although it's still a greenhouse gas).

People like him should be BANNED from making or influencing decisions on climate change if he gets basic facts WRONG.

14. This interview was unbelievable.
Boehner was so overthetop moronic that at one point I thought Stephanopulous was just going to give in to helpless giggling. Boehner is one of their leaders! This is the cream of the crop as far as Republicans are concerned!

Summary -

Carbon emissions - Carbon? We breathe. Cows fart. We can't do anything but soon we'll have a plan out about how we can't do anything. Taxes bad.

After all, fully half of every grain of table salt is pure chlorine.
