Do you feel safe in your privacy?
I'd like you to ask yourself the following three simple questions:

1. Did you feel safe in your privacy under the Clinton administration?
2. Did you feel much less safe in this regard under Bush? I'm talking about intercepted phone calls, emails, web postings, and web habits.
3. Do you feel any safer in this regard under Obama versus Bush?

If #3 is "no", then I would say this is an area where we need to continue actively pushing.

Of course, this may not be important to you. Perhaps you feel that it doesn't matter if the Government can spy on us at will.

since about 1970.

2. I've lived in countries where tapped phones were the norm.
In fact, you usually got a better connection when "the authorities" were listening in.

If you don't want people to know, don't put it "out there." No matter what any country says about civil liberties and freedom and privacy, you've got to guard your own if you want to keep it to yourself. The UK is way worse than the US is in this regard. Most nations in the Middle East are constrained only by their access to sufficient amounts of technology to monitor on a large-scale basis.

Don't assume that pnones, email or any electronic communication method over a long distance is secure. It isn't. Neither is the mail.

Snuggle up and whisper if you really need to keep a secret. Otherwise...behave accordingly. There's no unringing that bell.

3. I'm more aware of what I say or type nowadays.
Slightly off-topic, but I just heard of a weird situation. An elderly man's son installed some sort of monitoring system in the father's house so that the son could hear what was going on in the father's house.
Not sure the father knew about the monitor.
It all came out in the open when one of the grandsons was complaining about the son(his uncle). The uncle and his wife heard the complaint via the monitoring system and came over to confront the grandson.

I'm wondering at the legality of this. It's one thing to have a baby monitor set up in one room and you be in another, but separate houses, with an elderly person not having control of the monitor? :wtf:

I told him it wasn't nearly as bad as I had imagined.

8. No, not particularly and no..
Privacy is but a whimsical will-o-the-wisp in the USA and has been for decades.

Hell, they've been recruiting kids in the schools to tattle on their parents for at least a couple of decades now..

I recall when I was in school that's what we were told they did in the Soviet Union..
