Poll question: Is thread killing a bad thing?
.
.
.

sometimes "thread-killing" is good IMO

sometimes it is intentional

sometimes it is NOT intentional

sometimes it is just plain selfish

sometimes . . .

:freak:

I responded to a thread and no one else responded after me. I kill a lot of threads.

edited for clarity.

12. That was my intended interpretation,
.
.
.

locking is a different scenario.

And, would be a controversial poll, maybe not even permissible as attacks on the mods could result - and they don't appreciate that much -

such a poll would most likely indeed get "locked"

to kill something because you don't like it for whatever reasons. Hide the thread, if you don't like it.

edit: by killing, I mean starting a flame war in the middle of a thread so it gets locked.

17. Interesting observation. It never crossed my mind that people would do that.
.
.
.

But it makes sense

"by killing, I mean starting a flame war in the middle of a thread so it gets locked."

It is actually so obvious to me nowthat you mention it, it's a wonder I didn't observe such behavior in the 6 years I've been here.

I mean of course I bumped into my share of flame wars, but did not participate.

It never occurred to me that people started them to get others threads locked.

wow

me be slooooooooooow canuk!

14. I seem to have an uncanny natural ability for it, but unintentional
I even stopped a recent William Pitt thread after only about five posts. My most impressive one to date to be sure. I don't mean to.

16. Yes, its a bad thing.
I'll post a thread, and 20 people will respond favorably, but there's always that one dickhead who gets offended or pretends to get offended and then he or she PMs their buddies and they start a flame war to get the thread locked.

They're the ones that should be banned. Not people who stimulate discussion in a fun way.

23. Almost all of it is phoney.
On a mb, it isn't necessary to take offense. One can merely ignore it, or if anything, alert. Posters don't need to parse words for minute correctness as they do here. It's a way of deliberately missing the point, which is the opposite of communication.

That's what floats some boats, but it's pretty transparent. And counterproductive.

29. There it is again, critiquing words...
Edited on Mon Apr-20-09 03:31 PM by Waiting For Everyman
I guess the point was too hard to dispute - which shows my point nicely. Thanks. Actually, I was commenting on the behavior, not the person doing it - there's a difference. I would think that people so attuned to nuance would be aware of such things. But then, it only seems to go one way.

(Well CC, looks like descriptive adjectives are out too.)

Not really though, I don't intend to pay it any more attention than usual.

22. Lately I've been the last person to post on what I thought were good and worthwhile threads
Edited on Mon Apr-20-09 10:17 AM by MedleyMisty
I bumped two of them up to see if I could get them started again, but no.

I don't know why no one responded after my posts - I certainly wasn't trying to be offensive or start a flame war. I wanted to discuss the subject more and hear other people's opinions.

The only thing I can figure is that I do tend to write long posts when I'm really interested in something and maybe people were like tl;dr. Also, I tend to have a very...unique way of looking at things and maybe that puts people off.

Betting that this post kills this thread.

One was about the news coverage of the torture issue and the other was about capitalism and human nature.

31. Oh Medley I have stopped many a thread with an extended response.
But the truth is, I was just late getting in and everyone had their say.. but it does feel kind of lonely out there when you have this great epiphany and no one responds.. been there and done that:toast:

And either just not click on the stuff they don't like, or hide the threads.

Simple, really.
