Is Obama smart enough to be sending us a message?
Edited on Mon Apr-20-09 05:01 PM by Fendius
A few other people on here suggested that Obama might be sending a message of "Dont give up" toward the CIA and Torture accusations..
We know he isn't prosecuting through his admin. But why then open the memo's to the public?? Is it beyond us to think he(or him and others) knew what a lengthy exhausting procedure this could lead to, and by opening the memo's he put a foot in the door, leaving the public and media to either push or drop this.. I hope we keep on this people, WE DONT TORTURE, no one has the right anywhere on this planet to torture another. Ethics are ethics, we simply dont do that, no politics, no semantics, right or wrong.. We should never think we(or anyone else) has the authority to do that (or kill in my eyes) any other person...

sorry, coffee plus emotions,)

1. Simply put
As much as some here would like to think there is a groundswell against torture, there is not. The onyl way to get these guys in jail is to make sure the media whips up an anti torture frenzy, which is what Obama is trying to do. Unless the American people show that they really really mean it, he is not going to prop up something that we the people will allow to be torn down by the media the next time Britney Spears shaves her hair.

5. You are right about the lack of a groundswell.
For a couple of years, I forwarded news stories and DU posts to some of my friends. Only one of them ever responded. His response was to tell me that he was getting the same indifference that I was most of the time.

If torture can get enough attention, maybe there will be investigations. But I think there would have to be public pressure to take it beyond investigations.

Jimmy Carter was the first President I remember who addressed human rights. Many people yawned. Carter was right.

I think that the problem is that people don't like to be reminded of bad
things that they do, or that happen to them. It's not exactly fun reliving traumatic events.

3. We all must start pressuring our congress people
It's all so very frustrating though isn't it.

4. How about he says, "We will prosecute criminals who tortured people."?
Or, "We will support you in your efforts to prosecute the criminals who ordered, or carried out the orders, to torture."?

I have heard no indication by Obama or his underlings that they are willing to proceed against the CIA and the politicians who ordered them to commit atrocities.

6. Because
That would telegraph the punch to the MSM, who will do their best to make sure the idea of prosecution is buried before the public gets angry.

7. If the president is unable to publicly defend the rule of law and must sneak around to do it
it's time we woke up and how. If that's the case, that we are so lawless and corrupt, we need to face some hard truths.

I don't think it's the case. But if you're right, then that has staggering implications about the society in which we live.

9. Participation in democracy doesn't end at the voting booth. Our leaders
need to be led in the right direction.

They were misinformed to the point of being easily led. Single sourcing your news is not good citizenship.

12. No. This post is just like the Ohio recount posts where Kerry apologists
were thinking Kerry was sending out messages about recounting.

Kerry retreated.

Obama isn't going to buck the people that control him.
