Could a 100 mpg vehicle be anything except a two-seater econobox built in Asia? An Anderson, Ind.-based startup says it can.

Bright Automotive today announced what it says is the "world's first purpose-built 100 mpg vehicle aimed at commercial and government fleets." And the company plans to build it in the United States.

21. Nice...
I'd do it... Now, what's the cost?

Oh, I forget, they want to introduce it as "fleet", so they can get quantity orders.

8. I think it looks very cool!
I love the sci-fi look of some of these hybrid-type vehicles. Of course the color could be improved (I like color, not neutrals). But I can't argue with the styling!

9. Why does the article call it a truck when it's clearly a van?
As an avid gardener, I've been hoping for a high-mileage little truck, for hauling mulch, bales of straw, chicken poop, etc. But a van just won't cut it.

13. Just a classification
All vans are classified as light trucks. I too wish they would come out with a small truck, like the ford ranger, that was a high mileage hybrid. I don't know how much power they would have, but for what you talked about, or for hauling stuff off to the dump, and cleaning up around the home or in my case business, it would be great. I still would need a truck that could handle a snowplow for the winter, and pull my trailer, but a small one would save me a bundle if it got 100 miles to the gallon!

10. Why do they always try to make these things look as stupid as possible?
I understand they have to mess around with the aerodynamics to get that kind of gas mileage, but Jeebus! Just make the thing look normal.

16. Because up until very recently car bodies have not been "designed"
They have been "styled", that is what we think of as "normal" these days.

Now that bodies are starting to be *designed* for best aerodynamics rather than styled for looks they appear odd to us, it's purely a matter of what we have become accustomed to.

You think that van looks odd, check out this Mercedes concept that is based on the hydrodynamics of a boxfish..

OK, so you chopped the ugliest 1/8th off of a Pontiac Aztek. It's still the ugliest vehicle ever made :P
