Evidently, John McCain is not insane enough for the wingnut fringe
Edited on Wed Apr-22-09 11:15 AM by Cyrano
McCain is up for reelection to the senate next year. And it seems that he's now going to have a challenger in the Republican primary.

Chris Simcox, the founder of the Minutemen Defense Corps, is going to try to beat McCain in the primary and take his senate seat.

The Minutemen Defense Corps is a group of anti-immigration nuts who patrol the U.S. border with Mexico waiting for any "THEMS" who try to enter the country illegally. They are a wingnut paramilitary organization who consider themselves to be among the few "real" American patriots.

It will be interesting to see how this primary turns out next year. I'm no fan of McCain, but I do think he's a bit more sane that the majority of Republicans in congress. If he gets beat out by this fringe lunatic, it will be just one more sign of where the Republican party is headed. And just because they're in the minority, let's never underestimate the danger they present to this country.

(Google McCain minutemen for lots more info on this topic.)

4. Agree about McCain being somewhat moderate...
However, he sold out to the fundies to get the nomination, and picking Palin brings up serious questions about his sanity in my mind.

This should prove interesting. Will the wingnuts put someone up crazy enough for the Dem to win almost by default? Seems unlikely there in Az. I'm sure immigration and guns are going to drive the election, and Dems are generally at a disadvantage if those issues are at the top of the list.

6. I honestly think he could have won if he picked a better VP.
Someone with financial know-how like Bloomberg.

Of course they would have cut taxes and put us into oblivion by next year but hell...

13. Politically Palin was his only bet and it was a long long shot.
No way a all white male ticket was going to beat Obama. No way Mike Bloomberg (pro-choice, pro-gun control) or any other moderate or perceived moderate was going to do anything but drive the GOP base home on election day.

His only choice was a hard right fundie for the base. Palin was a horrible candidate and choice in who you would want to have for a VP but they needed a "first" as well. Her intro was all about her being a woman not a right winger, that was the only thing that gave them a remote chance. It's hard to run against a wave creating history, you have to try to jump on it a bit yourself.
