15. Delete it.
If you're curious, go to their website and log in there. Do NOT click on any link supplied in an email.

for the record, I will assume this is serious. PayPal NEVER uses active links in emails, they tell you to go to paypal.com without hyperlinking it. I never click on hyperlinks in emails unless they a: come from someone I trust and make sense or b: are innocuous (like a sale at a site I have shopped at before)

5. Login into your paypal account manually.
Dont use the link. See if your Paypal account says anything. Check the email header of that message and see where it really came from.

7. Login as Heywood Yablowme, password Fuckyouthief!!!
Seriously, the advice to forward the email (with headers) to the PAYPAL people is probably the best advice.

8. go directly to your Paypal Account via Paypal website and IMMEDIATELY change your Login Password
There is no need to ever open an Ebay or Paypal email. Always just go to your account via the actual website and check your messages there.

12. Paypal or any other financial institution knows your real name.
If it's addressed "Dear Valued Customer" that's the give away. I use a yahoo.com box just for my paypal so I automatically know when I get one on one of my other boxes it's a phishing attempt.

13. Almost certainly a scam...
Edited on Wed Apr-22-09 11:23 AM by Puzzler
... I get at least one per week, and I don't (and have never had) a PayPal account. All they want to do is to clean your account out as soon as they get your info.

Incidentally, almost 100% of these types of emails are scams and spam. "Spam" because, all of the ones in my inbox, for some reason, don't seem to know my proper name (I'm being sarcastic).

Also, the link that you click through to is a "fake" site, designed to look like a PayPal page (very easy to do!).

Another way to spot fake links is to point (but don't click) your cursor over the hyperlink. If you look at the bottom left of you browser page, you'll see that the actual link address does not match a PayPal address. Often you can see where the fake site is... country of origin, etc., from the address suffix.

20. Pass your cursor over the link WITHOUT clicking on it
Look at the bottom of your window. It should show the REAL URL. Remember that it's easy to disguise a URL as something else.

21. PayPal email addresses are notoriously easy to spoof
Always go to the PayPal site and sign in manually.
