Khalid Sheikh Mohammed
We've been hearing alot about him in recent days... some Flashbacks:

http://blogs.abcnews.com/theblotter/2007/09/how-the-cia-bro.html

<snip>

And just yesterday, an intelligence source told ABC News that the dapper man behind the most successful terror plot against America was not rumpled and disheveled when he was apprehended. He was as well-kept as ever.

But the CIA, conscious of the propaganda value of appearance, messed his hair and pulled his shirt from his pants, leaving us with the image of KSM we have today, and according to days of NSA intercepts, leaving his fellow al Qaeda terrorists chagrined over the changes to their esteemed colleague.

transcript from Khalid Sheikh Mohammed "tribunal" @ Gitmo:

PRESIDENT: People made false statement as a result of this?

DETAINEE: I did also

1. the US also had detained his two young sons, age 6&9, and told
him that they were going to be harmed.

What would happen to anyone who did that to an American prisoner of war???? Just imagine the rage-

:shrug:

3. We need to keep balance: Khalid Sheikh Mohammed is/was as far as we know
a despicable, horrible criminal. He himself may have and most likely did order many cruel, inhuman acts. He does not deserve our sympathy. But, we don't enforce the law out of sympathy for one side or the other. We enforce laws because the laws are just, because they are the expression of the political will of the people of the United States (or for international law, the civilized world) and because we seek justice.

President Bush and Khalid Sheikh Mohammed deserve the same right to due process, as do we all. So, this is not about what kind of person Khalid Sheikh Mohammed was or how he looks but rather about justice for all.

I do not interpret the OP to be a plea for sympathy for Khalid Sheikh Mohammed. I don't think that the person who posted was expressing sympathy for Khalid Sheikh Mohammed. I just want to remind people responding to this post that the torture issue is not about who the people were who were tortured or what they did or even what they knew. It is about the integrity of our government, about whether we adhere to our Constitution, our laws and the international treaties that bind us.
