Doomed dogs get on the rescue wagon to other shelters
http://www.usatoday.com/news/nation/2009-04-22-pet-transport_N.htm?csp=24&RM_Exclude=Juno

By Sharon L. Peters, Special for USA TODAY
Thousands of death-row dogs are getting reprieves every week, plucked from crowded, high-kill shelters and transported — often hundreds of miles — to places where there are open cages in shelters and open hearts in the community.

1. It's been happening for years here - the surrounding counties have bad adoption rates
And most of the time this county has pretty good ones.

My cat was relocated from a county south of here. His feral Mom had a litter under a trailer, the kittens were caught and brought to my county, the Mom was never caught. When I adopted him, he was about four or five weeks old and really too young for adoption. But he's grown up to be a fun though insane cat and has a home for life.

2. Best detail of the story ...
The Rhode Island shelter, which often has a waiting list of up to 75 for puppies and small dogs, has received 502 dogs and puppies from the overcrowded shelter nearly 900 miles away. Because of the program, says Potter League's Christie Smith, the community can "get great puppies here" rather than "fueling puppy mills" by buying them at pet stores.

3. Rescue groups are doing this, too.
We just adopted our little mini dachshund Sammy from Coast to Coast Dachshund Rescue in Memphis. He came up to New England on a rescue transport with 40 other dogs, all of whom had a foster or adoptive home ready for them. It was cool seeing all of the happy people picking up their new furbabies!

I had been looking for months for the right doxie to add to our family. Every time I saw one online that looked like a good fit they were gone before I even got my application in. I did look at other small breeds and small mixes, but I had to make sure that I found a dog that would get along with our 11 year old mini Ruby. She needed a mellow, non-alpha buddy or there would have been issues... And, if you know dachshunds, finding a mellow one is close to impossible! There were about 30 dachshunds in Tennessee to choose from, and we really did find the perfect new family member in Sammy.

8. I had a beautiful red mini doxie named Ruby too (hence my Rubyduby name)

She went across the bridge in 2003 but I still love her like crazy :)

A home is not a real home without a doxie under your feet!
Current resident doxie in charge, Rusty:

On edit: all my doxies come from our local county shelter (which makes me wonder - what is wrong with people that don't love such sweetie pies?!?!)

9. Rusty is a cutey!
My Ruby is the puppy love of my life. My new guy Sammy was a victim of divorce, and my previous rescue guy Bandit was dropped off at a shelter when he was 10. I don't know how people give the wiener-babies up, but I am glad I found mine and then found me.

5. It's important that this sort of effort be combined with an aggressive spay neuter campaign
campaign in the area of the shelter with the high kill rate. Otherwise nothing really changes in the long term.

6. Our pooch came from this scenario.
He was found loose in NC and we adopted him from a shelter in MA. Poor guy...no one wanted him because he was listed as a rottie mix but was only 20 lbs...not the rottie people were looking for. (We think he may actually be a shiba/aussie mix.)

Our gain!
