Charles Grodin To Sean Hannity: You've Got A Fascist Mentality

I was disappointed by Grodin for much of tonight's interview for giving Sean Hannity too much of a pass on his hate mongering. But Grodin gathered steam as he went on and near the end of Part 2 (below), at about the 1 minute mark, Grodin confronted Hannity on his "fascist mentality," much to Hannity's obvious shock. Apparently, it's not easy for him to take what he so freely dishes out. Even better, Grodin asked Hannity, "What branch of the military did you serve in?" Chickenhawk Hannity answered that his father fought in World War II. He was about to receive another round of ridicule when the segment ended. Hannity also told Grodin he'd consent to being waterboarded. Where do we sign up? Video after the jump.

for one thing, mom's dad was 52 when the US got into the war, and dad was 13 when the war ended. Dad's dad is technically a WWI vet. He was in Washington finishing his training when the armistice happened.

Anyway, I think that's a bad gotcha-type question. Only people with military service get to have opinions? FDR, for example, cannot be for US entry into WWII because he was not a veteran? Clinton can't be for the Kosovo war because he's not a veteran?

It is definitely a "gotcha" question and no, people are not automatically disqualified from commenting on the military if they have not served however, the problem is when these idiots (usually right-wingers like Hannity, Limbaugh, Rove, etc...)who advocate that America send its young men and women to fight and die for no other reason than to bully other nations and prove America's might. If you look at leaders who did actually serve in the military they seemed a bit more introspective about making the call to use the military because they had seen what comes of war. Our men and women in the military are always willing to defend the nation to the point of sacrificing their lives and for that we owe them the respect to use them as little as possible and only when our actual survival is at stake. That is what I believe Grodin was getting at.

My father served in Vietnam. He was not drafted, but volunteered as a new immigrant to this country. He wanted to serve. He doesn't talk much about his service. When I was 18 during the first Gulf War, when it seemed that the war was going to be a huge engagement, my plan was to enlist. My father objected vehemently to the point where there was a great deal of tension between us for a time. My argument was that he served so why was I being criticized for wanting to. His response was that he had raised me to be smarter than he was so that I would not put my life in danger for a cause that was clearly not the defense of the nation. The military has been misused since WWII. Our military serves with honor, but our leaders dishonor them by sending them to fight wars for riches rather than for the defense of the nation which is their purpose under the Constitution.

a la Christopher Hitchens, his isolated experience would tell him almost nothing of what is would be like to be waterboarded in real conditions. The waterboarding we did to prisoners was certainly not an isolated incident in otherwise pleasant circumstances. Context is everything here.

Context is everything. Our soldiers are exposed to that treatment during SERE training so that they have some understanding of what may be used to get them to give information useful to their captors. I would imagine that the experience is extremely different when the people conducting these techniques on them are not friendly and are not doing it with the intent to train. There is no guarantee that foreign governments that capture our soldiers are going to respect their human rights. The enemy combatants/terrorist suspects/people that we have/had at Abu Grahib (sp?), Gitmo, or the black sites that didn't even technically exist weren't afforded that comfort either. For all intents and purposes, our soldiers and the detained people under our custody would not be out of line in thinking that they might be harmed up to and including being killed. Hannity knows he is going to be completely safe, even if he is to be made uncomfortable for a brief moment. He knows he is going home the moment that the exercise is over. It's like saying you know what it is like being a police officer cause you went on a ride along for an hour or two.
