Sen. John McCain warned that a pursuit for charges against Bush administration officials who helped design harsh interrogation tactics used on terrorist suspects would turn into a "witch hunt."

I'm pretty sure that the real witch hunters of the past used torture to get "evidence" from the so-called witches.

1. I don't think it's stupid phrasing at all.

I'll wager most people simply equate with a worthless and vengeful attack on innocent people a la McCarthy or... witch hunts. It's simple, it conveys an unfair practice. it's useful rhetoric for them.

5. It is not persecution (a witchhunt) if there is real evidence that warrants an investigation.
