Pelosi has denied any knowledge of specific methods of torture, yet
there was a story this a.m. (?) claiming she wanted this admin to use more tortuous torture procedures. Does anyone have the real story?

4. It was reported years ago...
that in 2002 a secret briefing by CIA officials to the House Intelligence Committee informed Peter Goss, Pat Roberts, Bob Graham, Jane Harman, Pelosi, and I guess 3 others about the torture. I don't know who leaked the story, but the only quote came from Peter Goss.

This from today...

Pelosi Says Congress Was Never Told Torture Techniques Being Used
7 hours ago
(RTTNews) - House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., said Thursday that she had never been told that the CIA was actually employing harsh interrogation techniques that some have called torture.

Since the release of Bush Administration legal memos detailing the specifics of the use of waterboarding and other enhanced interrogation techniques, some have questioned whether the lawyers and government officials who authorized them should be prosecuted.

However, those opposed to such prosecution have frequently suggested that leaders in Congress who were briefed on the programs also bear some responsibility for any violations that may have occurred because they were briefed about the programs.

Pelosi, who is one of the "gang of eight," which includes the leaders of both parties from the House and Senate as well as the chairmen and ranking minority members of the intelligence committees of both chambers, flatly denied ever being informed by Bush Administration officials that enhanced interrogation techniques were being used.

"We were not, I repeat we were not told that waterboarding or any other sort of enhanced interrogation methods were used," Pelosi said. "What they did tell us was that they had some legislative counsel thoughts and legislative counsel opinions that they could, but not that they were."

She added, "And furthermore, if and when they would be used they would brief Congress at that time."

the older article does say at least "2" people did ask (for stronger measures). NO names given.

and that one of the questions asked was if the techniques were tough enough...but no name(s) given

6. I don't see her as part of this and I am not anxious to be going after her
I want the REAL criminals.

We can clean up any fringe involvement later.

Similarly, I have no yen to go after the CIA guys until we have Bush and Cheney in cells.

7. I remember when the neocons triggered this trap
They "briefed" a few Dems in leadership positions about what the program entailed. They were unable to share what they learned with anyone, not even legal council. What Pelosi is saying now is that they were told about the potential use of the program, but that it was not being used. She is also saying that she told them to inform her if they do(did) use torture, but they never got back to her.

These Dems were placed in an untenable situation because they were threatened with breaching national security if they so much as consulted an attorney as to the legality of the "program".

15. "triggered this trap" to cover their asses if it should come up in the
future. Thank you. That makes sense.

As their war plans failed miserably, so is this, because there's so much they didn't consider.

9. Boehner Vs Pelosi
http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/blogs/nov05election/detail?entry_id=39012

Boehner released news reports from 2007 that seemed to contradict Pelosi, and Pelosi's office fired back with their own. Boehner said Congressional leaders "received an awful lot of information" about interrogations, and that "not a word was raised at the time, not one word. And I think you're going to hear more and more about the bigger picture here, that ... the war on terror after 9/11 was done in a bipartisan basis on lots of fronts."

Here is the transcript from Pelosi's press conference today: Q: "At the time you were briefed, did you raise objections?

Pelosi: "It is not appropriate for me to talk about what happens at briefings. It is very interesting that people are talking so freely. But I can say this: they have been talking about it for a while. At that or any other briefing, and that was the only briefing that I was briefed on in that regard, we were not -- I repeat, we were not -- told that water boarding or any of these other enhanced interrogation methods were used.

"What they did tell us is that they had some legislative counsel -- the Office of Legislative Counsel opinions that they could be used, but not that they would. And they further -- further, the point was that if and when they would be used, they would brief Congress at that time, A.

"B, I know that there are some different interpretations coming out of that meeting. My colleague, the Chairman of the committee, has said, 'Well, if they say that it's legal, you have to know that they're going to use them.'
