Washington, DC in late April 1971 - - how many of you old timers remember?
200,000 people demonstrating against the Vietnam War in the last great turnout. I was stationed there in the Army but made it to the Saturday and Sunday events. The cops started busting heads early Monday morning, and the 82d Airborn was all over the place. You wouldn't believe how many Army guys like me were there Saturday. We stuck out like sore thumbs with no hair, but we were welcomed by one and all.

Any of you older DUers remember that weekend, especially the musical groups that were there Saturday and Sunday?

The news media actually covered stuff like that in those days.

5. I slept in a sleeping bag near the Washington Monument.
Drank cheap wine, ate junk food, and smoked you know what. That's probably why I can't remember the musical groups that performed that weekend.

13. Are you the one who stole my "legal" cigarettes?
Had to pay some guy two bucks for another pack the next morning. I think cigs cost about 20 cents a pack in the PX back then.

17. I was kidding, as you probably know.
I hope someone can refresh my 61-year-old memory about the musical groups at the Washington Monument.

12. I think he threw his ribbons,
and not the actual medals. But yes, that was the week Kerry testified before Congress. I might have met him, but there were so many Vets there you never knew who you were talking to most of the time.

14. I was 12 years old and already politically active.
My 16 year old aunt and a few of her dirty fucking hippy friends took me. I hung onto all the fliers and newsletters that I gathered for a couple of decades after that, but, alas, I lost all of them between one move or another.

19. I remember very well...
I worked setting up a triage, clinic at the American University All Faith Center. That Wednesday night before the demonstrations, I met and had a 5-hour tete-a-tete conversation (and, some of the time, impassioned debate), with John Kerry. He came to AU for an emergency organizers' meeting called at the last minute over the Yippies' announced intention to block Dupont Circle starting Friday by setting trash cans alight in the streets. We hastily arranged a meeting room out of our just completed examining room/clinic staff area. John arrived with a buddy (Vet) in a baby blue Dodge Dart 4-door sedan. They had borrowed the car from the Nuns at Catholic University. It was hysterical seeing these 2 Vets extracting themselves from that compact size baby blue Nun's sedan! Twenty minutes later, the Black Panthers arrived and unceremoniously evicted me and my college friends from the meeting room and the building for the duration of the meeting.

24. There was a huge turn-out in SF. I was a young-un & I was there & the Filmore West in the evening.
Such a huge turn-out. I smuggled in a bottle of wine to the Filmore West by putting it under my clothes and pretending I was pregnant. What memories.

22. So there I was watching Uncle Walter's evening news ...

... when they cut to an interview with a 'protestor'. I almost fell out of my chair. It was a Navy buddy of mine that I thought I had seen the last of two years earlier. I'd like to look him up just to let him know I saw the interview.

26. This politically alert 14 year old had to watch it on the teevee.
Back when teevee had stuff worth watching. I don't remember the musical groups though, only impressions of the emotions of the speakers.

But I am still an old-timer, my bones tell me so.

29. I've found mentions online of Country Joe and Peter, Paul & Mary
Somehow I don't recall that one myself -- maybe it was during the period when our tv had died. But it sounds like pretty much the usual suspects were around.

30. yeah, I was there . . .
I was working for a very liberal Member of Congress at the time, and as recall we camped out in his office for a couple of days . . . also recall hooking up with old friend Pete Seeger at some point and marching with him, but more specific memories are a bit hazy after all these years . . .

I DO recall chanting "More pay for police!" when we marched past D.C. cops, frequently eliciting some smiles from the boys in blue . . .
