Time for an e-mail campaign to the media outlets, re the term "torture"

I am infuriated at the continued water-carrying by every major news outlet. Enough with the goddamn polite euphamisms and Karl Rove talking points! The memos have been released, there is no ambiguity. By continuing to soften the terminology, it becomes ever more obvious that they are taking marching orders from someone. They are demonstrating that they are not even trying to be journalistic organizations instead of propagandists for the right wing criminals.

From a purely practical point of view it is necessary to prosecute torture.

Right now Al-Qaida and the Taliban have set up shop in Northern Pakistan. The territory has been ceded to them by the Pakistan government. From there they are beginning to enforce their oppressive version of Sharia law. Girls are not allowed to go to school, barbers are punished for cutting beards etc. Moderate Muslims in Pakistan are NOT happy about this. There is no love lost between these two lifestyles.

We have to enlist modern Pakistan as allies in this fight. It is their Country and they are essentially the only people who can put an end to the Taliban’s influence among the population.

They know they can be tortured by Al-Qaida. They know they can be tortured by us. We are foreigners, we don’t speak their language,. . WE are the unknown danger. WE are much scarier to the man in the street than the Taliban are.

We have to reestablish ourselves as the people who DON’T torture. The only way we can do that is to punish the people who ordered and authorized torture.

It is that simple.
