Half of Texas Republicans favor secession
http://www.salon.com/politics/war_room/2009/04/23/texas_secession/index.html?source=rss&aim=/politic

On its own, Texas Gov. Rick Perry's endorsement of the idea of secession just sounded crazy. But a new poll suggests the governor knows his constituents, and what he'll have to do in order to win a Republican primary against likely challenger Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison.

A survey conducted by Research 2000 -- and commissioned by Daily Kos -- shows that 48 percent of Texas Republicans think their state would be better off as an independent nation than it is as part of the U.S. The same number disagreed. And 51 percent of them approve of Perry's comments, compared to 44 percent who disapprove.

Overall, secession fever isn't nearly so high. 61 percent of total respondents think Texas is better off as part of the U.S., compared to 35 percent who think it would do better if it were independent, and 58 percent disapproved of what Perry said, while 37 percent approved.

4. Bang! You nailed it
Being a Texan, and being with these folks non-stop, you never heard this talk while Chimpy was in office. It's been 100 days, and not having power in the executive and legislative branch of the national govt. is driving them freaking nuts. That's what it is all about.

24. No it wouldn't
You might want to consider the feelings of those in Texas who are actually moving this state forward. We have opportunities just within our reach to turn this state blue.

It will happen.

It never fails to surprise us Texans how many progressives think it's so funny to trash Texas. Thanks for all your help. :sarcasm:

I don't want Texas to go anywhere. I just think it would be funny to have the "minutemen" on the other side of the fence. :D

8. I wonder if Perry regrets what he said
Secession would be a major headache for him. I wonder if he thought the idea would really be this popular.

11. I say we make Texas Republicans leave Texas and the US.
Send them to Guam and let them secede out there, where they can only harm themselves.

14. We happen to love our state, thank you very much
and we have absolutely no intention of leaving it. Now, if you want to come down here & help us take back our state, we'd be more than happy to accept your help. Realize that this will mean you will actually have to do some hard work, with little or no support from the DNC, little or no support from DU, no money & no resources other than what we all scrape together.

If, otoh, all you're willing to contribute to the effort is to say "Leave Texas," then kindly stuff it.

And sorry ... but I'm needed in Pennsylvania. We may be a blue state now, but we always have to be vigilant up here ... that "Alabama" part in the middle (where I live) is always threatening to turn us red. Once Gov. Rendell is out of office, I'm not sure what will happen next.

26. Bless the whole world - no exceptions (not even Texas)
Nice song by the way! Thanks! At least I think you meant that as a positive comment. :hi:

We are Americans and we are part of the great union of United States. And the vast majority of Texans do not favor secession. Yes there are republican wing nuts in Texas - so what? Every state has some.

Rick Perry is welcome to pack his bags and leave anytime and take as many of the wing nuts that want to go with him.

Texas ain't moving anywhere! Except moving more politically to the left if anything.:)
