I fear the next Repub. talking point: the American people don't care that we torture.
I heard this point being made on public radio, of all places. The show had several commentators. One said that the American people give the military a lot of leeway, and they want them to have it, in protecting the nation's safety.

Is this what it is going to come down to? Will we Dems be in the same predicament that the REpublicans were when they forced the impeachment of Bill Clinton against the wishes of the clear majority of Americans?

This is frightening. I want to think that it is not true, that the American people do NOT approve of torture, but I wonder, I really do.

Are there any relevant polls out there on the attitude of Americans on the use of torture? I haven't seen any myself...

2. public radio is now (re)public(an) radio...
Ever since I heard Cokie Roberts "reporting" on the Bush Charm Offensive during Campaign2000.

She "informed" us that Bush was "charming, oh, so charming," and that his penchant for giving nicknames makes him "charming, oh, so charming" and that he'll get things done in DC because he was "charming, oh, so charming."

I'm not surprised that public radio would take this slant on torturing.

Did I mention Cokie Roberts told us in 2000 that Bush was "charming, oh, so charming?" :puke:

3. Well by condoning torture for American prisoners
Edited on Fri Apr-24-09 02:42 PM by Wapsie B
then we must be ok with having our soldiers tortured when they're captured right? Try as they might the repugs can't have it both ways. Let them look at their kids they send off to war and say that torture is ok.

5. Considering their results in the last two elections . . .
I'd have to say that Republicans are very poor judges of what the American people care about.

7. If that turns out to be correct we will become international pariahs
American tourists will be at risk anywhere on earth. American corporate interests will be targets for saboteurs around the globe.

Right now it's only the Cheney/Bush gang that's despised everywhere.

If we appear to condone their actions we will be painted with the same brush.

9. I'm not worried. We are on the right side of this thing.
Americans need constantly to be educated.

As photos are released and as personal stories of tortured are told by those involved but who were against it, the basic common decency of people in America will win out over this propaganda.

I'm really not worried.

Did you see Sheppard Smith on this question?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OjCzfGm0njM

Shep: "We are America, I don't give a rat's ass if it helps. We are America, we don't fucking torture!"

That's FOX News, they can't even convince their own mouthpieces that torture is ever OK.

10. Thank you. That helps.
When all of this comes to light, the American people will reject the practice of torture. We have alot to lose if we don't get to the bottom of this outrage.

11. Just now on Hardball I heard Pat Buchanan mention a poll that said
Americans are in favor of use of torture to prevent future attacks.

It's happened sooner than I thought.

Guess we can look for it on the Sunday talk shows...

12. American people give the military a lot of leeway
then why did we convict and send those soldiers to jail for torturing in Iraq? The military is the only agency to pay the price so far for torture.

13. Probably because they trust the military tribunal's judgment.
They perhaps fear the politicians won't do it right. Better to keep it in the military structure.

Just my guess...
