Remind that antichoice fundie..
That the GOP controlled govt from 00-06. And yet choice remains legal. Roe vs Wade wasn't overturned under or as a reusult of their watch.

Yet, on the campaign trail they make abortion a front and center issue. To lure the vote of the bot.

Once elected it was a different story. During legislative session you'd think abortion would have been a front and center issue on capitol hill from 00-06. But the debate was largely shoved to the back burner.

Why?

Because there is little or no profit from banning choice. Corporate America or their own campaign coffers wouldn't gain financially from banning abortion.

The GOP's agenda comes straight from their corporate masters.

My belief is that corporate America told the GOP to shelve the abortion debate.
There was money to be made and that WILL be the front and center issue.

Banning abortion or wasting time attempting to ban it doesn't make us rich.

They can't bleed America dry financially if they focus their time banning abortion.

The GOP clearly listened and served their masters well. And drove our nation off a cliff in the process.

Once again, as Nov '10 approaches and the campaign trails heat up..

Abortion will become front and center, at least until Nov 5th '10.

Ask that fundie..

Did the Tyrant King and his GOP deathsquad forget to ban abortion from 00-06?
Or we're their minds occupied elsewhere? Like raping our nation.

1. and when Dems are in charge there are less abortions
The GOP talks about abortion, but their policies make them go up. So if you're really against abortion, would you support policies that reduce them or the ones that increase them? Not really a tough choice. Unfortunately it's a logical one, and some people don't believe in logic.

4. You're overthinking this. It's actually much simpler than this.
You don't kill the goose that lays the golden eggs.

If they had outlawed abortion, the fundie voters would stay home on election day.

They'd never outlaw abortion, even if there was a way to make money off of it.

Because without energized fundies, the GOP would never have won (or come close enough to steal) back in 2004 and would have even lost the south in 2008.

6. Exactly, they can't kill the devil
Christianity needs the devil -- or it doesn't make any sense.

Satan worked for a while, but when cute devils started showing up at Halloween parties and on cans of meat analog, they needed someone else. Communism filled the bill for a while, but now that's gone. Then, they tried "secular humaism," but that just didn't scare anyone.

Now, they have the trifecta of abortion, gays, and terrorists to get the faithful's knees to knockin'. This is why they're willing to spend hundreds of millions of dollars to fight the "gay agenda" or why they won't ever pass anti-abortion laws.

9. I am not so sure.
I think they could just use the law as a way to scare the hell out of voters anyway and just say Dems will overturn it. Roe v Wade is established law they weren't going to overturn it, even if they had the majority size the Dems have now, but they still whipped their base up with the concept that they might. The positions on abortion are almost archaic because the law is established and most people are fine with that, maybe not personally, but on policy terms. Roe v Wade is here for good, but it's still an impactful political tool for either side of the issue. If abortion was outlawed, it would be overturned at some point and until it was the GOP would freak out fundie voters more than ever. It's just that it would never come to that because Roe is established and the country is fine with that. It may have been a golden egg for them all of these decades, but demographically it's getting to be more of an albatross. Catering to that base might get them the hardcore fundies but on so many other levels it loses them every other important and growing demographic.

7. Well, in a way, they actually would
the whole point of banning abortion is to control women. Part of that means keeping them as a reliable pool of low-wage, dead-end McWorkers. If you get pregnant at 17 and are forced to keep the baby, odds are you won't be going to law school any time soon.
