Swine Flu May Be Named Event of ‘International Concern’ by WHO

By Jason Gale

April 25 (Bloomberg) -- The World Health Organization is set to declare the deadly swine flu virus outbreak in Mexico and the U.S. a global concern, potentially prompting travel restrictions, said a person familiar with the matter.

An emergency committee of the WHO in Geneva will declare the outbreak “a public health event of international concern” in a 4 p.m. teleconference today, said the person, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the meeting is confidential. In response, WHO Director-General Margaret Chan may raise the level of pandemic alert, which could lead to travel restrictions aimed at curbing the disease’s spread.

1. Does the virus survive on surfaces at all? If so, for how long? Anybody know/have links?
Cuz if it does, travel restrictions don't solve the problem of spreading in a time when foods travel around the world.

Plant a garden, buy locally produced foods as much as possible, because it is so much better for you and your family to know where your food is from. Frankly, food that gets frequent flyer miles is pretty bland.

2. From an article in the NYtimes it sounds like its popped up in enough places
that travel restrictions won't do much.

9. CDC quoted as no point in containment measure as it is distributed geographically
Edited on Sat Apr-25-09 09:50 AM by stray cat
We are worried,” said Dr. Richard Besser, the acting head of the C.D.C. “We don’t know if this will lead to the next pandemic, but we will be monitoring it and taking it seriously.”

There is no point in trying to use containment measures in the United States, he said, because the swine flu virus has already appeared from San Antonio to San Diego, without any obvious connections among cases. Containment measures usually work only when a disease is confined to a small area, he said.

6. it doesn't matter because it's too late
I don't believe it survives on surfaces -- it's a membrane-enclosed virus (the baby virions wrap themselves in host cell membrane as they exit the cells) so probably needs to be in body fluids to survive.

But really, it's too late. Flu viruses have a 2-9 day incubation period. That means a host can be spreading the virus for days before they show symptoms and realize they're sick.

And it's been in Mexico for several weeks now. Anybody who was exposed in Mexico in the last several weeks could be harboring it, spreading it and not know it yet.

18. Influenza A & B survive on hard, nonporous surfaces from 24-48 hours.
Porous materials like tissues, cloth for less than 8-12 hours. Keep in mind transmission most likely occurs through the air, via droplets from sneezing, coughing.

8. I'm glad I am not a conspiracy theorist because this one has a stink to it
the "danger of contagious disease" talking point failed a few years ago for the anti-immigration crowd and this would fit right into it

but since I am not a conspiracy theorists I don't read THAT much into it

10. Cheney backed into a corner and "hoping" we are not attacked again
because that would vindicate him from the "torture" thing. And Rumfeld connection with the drug companies.....no I am very sure we have nothing to worry about

12. Considering how tight our security in places like Fort Detrick is I totally agree.

Indeed, nothing to worry. I bet the American Chemical war program as well as its nuclear force is handled rationally and safe....

...from the people who have b(r)ought you(r) Empire....

I hope this is not "the pandemic"... Hope everyone gets well again.

20. And who was it that predicted "Obama will tested "
in the early days of his Presidency...something to that effect?
" severely tested"..was that the wording??
Was that Cheney?
In fact, hasn't Cheney been blathering all over the airwaves of late?

and wasn't the anthrax in the 2004 attacks identified as a Ft. Detrick strain?
Created by the now deceased Bruce Ivins.?
and why do I feel Jerome Hauer is involved in this?
Oh, because he just happens to be director of several "emergency bio-terror response" companies.
And the Carlyle group is heavily invested in one of them, Bio-Port.
Bio-port is in Maryland.
Bio-port bought the patents for the anthrax vaccine from...Bruce Ivins.
Bio-Port won a very very lucrative DOD contract to give anthrax vaccines to the military.

somehow I expect a vaccine will pop up for this outbreak, and the DOD will give a contract to one of
Hauer's companies, as it did for the anthrax vaccine.

Yeah..I got links..

11. If I was a conspiracy theorist...I would feel it was a manufactured virus...
It first looked mostly like a swine virus but closer analysis showed it is a never-before-seen mixture of swine, human and avian viruses, according to the CDC.

However it doesn't look deadly enough.
