Google Map for swine flu cases (and a website for timeline of events)
Edited on Sat Apr-25-09 10:49 AM by rainbow4321
Don't know how often it is updated, but they do have the third TX case up already from 4/24 (see below) as well as the school kids in NY.

24/04/2009 Hayden had become the third confirmed case of swine flu at his Texas high school. It is a virus that has killed 68 people in Mexico and infected at least eight people in the United States.

Health officials arrived at the Henshaws house Friday and drew blood from the whole family, then told them to stay inside and away from the public, Henshaw told CNN.

And a website for swine flu timeline of events

(First entry in timeline):

March 30

Veratect reported that a 47-year-old city attorney for Cornwall was hospitalized in a coma at Ottawa General Hospital following a recent trip to Mexico. Family members reported the individual voluntarily reported to the hospital after gradually feeling ill upon returning from his trip on 22 March. The source stated that the hospital did not know the cause of illness. The case was reportedly on a respirator and awaiting a blood transfusion, but sources did not provide symptoms or a suggested cause of illness. This information was available in our web portal to all clients, including CDC and multiple US state and local public health authorities, however no one had connected this man’s illness with a potential crisis in Mexico.

1. Schertz is right up the road from me. Watching this very closely.
Just read that Canadian officials expect clusters in Canada given the amount of Canadians who travel back and forth from Mexico.

Though the website repeatedly says/writes that people just had a "respiratory illnesses" and deny any connection to swine flu despite they all had one thing in common---a recent trip to Mexico.

Weird how our MSM is leaving Canada out of the big picture in the timeline..

Twitter entries from the third link in my OP...do these match up with what the MSM is reporting???:

CDC has received 51 specimens from Canada; 16 were positive for Swine Influenza A (H1N1).

There are 16 additional suspected cases in California.

Mexican government orders all libraries, theaters and museums closed to prevent spread of swine influenza.

2. Word of mouth: Some are saing deaths in MC are closer to 200.
Edited on Sat Apr-25-09 10:45 AM by FedUpWithIt All
Readers in Mexico have been emailing the BBC describing the sense of fear gripping the country as a result of a flu virus outbreak, which has so far claimed up to 60 lives.

The World Health Organization says the virus has the potential to become a pandemic.

Read a selection of BBC readers' comments below.

I work as a resident doctor in one of the biggest hospitals in Mexico City and sadly, the situation is far from "under control". As a doctor, I realise that the media does not report the truth. Authorities distributed vaccines among all the medical personnel with no results, because two of my partners who worked in this hospital (interns) were killed by this new virus in less than six days even though they were vaccinated as all of us were. The official number of deaths is 20, nevertheless, the true number of victims are more than 200. I understand that we must avoid to panic, but telling the truth it might be better now to prevent and avoid more deaths.

Yesterday in my office it was a bit surreal walking in to see all in blue masks with deep cleansing of computer equipment and surfaces going on. Let's hope it is contained and does not escalate. The local news is reporting 200 fatalities and reports of flu spreading from areas outside of Mexico City. Given the volume of daily commuter traffic on cramped busses and trains, this may not have to be too virulent to be disastrous in human terms. I wonder what controls there will be on flights in and out.

6. There are issues with detection.
>>>"Current diagnostics... for seasonal influenza ... will not be able to tell you if individual has swine flu or seasonal flu." Thus it's hard to know how to treat patients with influenza sx in US - since swine flu is amantadine resistant and seasonal is resistant to Tamiflu.<<<

11. I'm thinking it may be all of our backyards
Especially with this Canadian info...doubt it has leapfrogged the majority of the US (from Mexico up to Canada).

As someone who works in a TX healthcare setting (for HIV+ people) that cares for a LOT of Hispanics (many with close ties to Mexico), it's caught my attention. Especially the comment I saw on the BBC website from a medical person who said that 2 of his (intern) co-workers who had gotten vaccinated died within a few days of getting this. WTF is going on?????
I'll be anxious to see if my facility adds on "swine flu" to their testing of people who come in with flu like symptoms. Right now we do the rapid flu test, give them the medicine if they test postive and send them on their way...or if they are too sick, send them to the hospital.

Browsing thru the sites that I have found, one of the concerns seems to be how Mexico had huge public gatherings for Easter/religious celebrations not long ago...which means this thing may have had those opportunities to already spread quite quickly thru an extra large number of people who were gathered in close quarters...all before the news broke about the swine flu existing.

9. Latest via Reuters from WHO: "It has pandemic potential"
"It has pandemic potential because it is infecting people," WHO Director-General Margaret Chan said in Geneva.

"However, we cannot say on the basis of currently available laboratory, epidemiological and clinical evidence whether or not it will indeed cause a pandemic."

The new flu strain -- a mixture of swine, human and avian flu viruses -- is still poorly understood and the situation is evolving quickly, Chan said.

...

The WHO says the virus from 12 of the Mexican patients is genetically the same as a new strain of swine flu, designated H1N1, seen in eight people in California and Texas. All of the eight later recovered.

An emergency committee of WHO experts, convening on Saturday, will advise Chan on issues including possibly changing the WHO's pandemic alert level, currently 3 on a scale of 1 to 6.

"We do not yet have a complete picture of the epidemiology or the risk, including possible spread beyond the currently affected areas," Chan said, adding the situation was seen as "serious."

13. It has already been
reported that he was exposed. There have been several posts and sources.

Seems like he would be sick by now if it were going to happen. Has he been visible over the last week? Honestly, I haven't had time to watch a lot of news so I can't say.

15. Interesting. Kansas and The Super-Corridor
The 2,661-mile KCSM operates the primary rail route in northern and central Mexico, linking Mexico City and Monterrey with Laredo, Texas, where more than 50 percent of the U.S.-Mexico trade crosses the border. The line also connects the major population centers of Mexico City and Monterrey with the heartland of the U.S. and serves the ports of Veracruz, Tampico and Lazaro Cardenas, a primary alternative to West Coast ports for shippers in the route between Asia and North America.

17. I believe there are more than have been reported.
Heard from an airport worker today who claims to have gotten exposed to someone confirmed to have it; none of those cases listed were in our airport in San Diego. How many other likely cases are missing?
