I am no lawyer, but I think that this story is at the heart of the world's woes. Businesses have way too much influence in critical decisions on the direction of human activities. Corporate "persons" have been given a legal seat somehow by courts and laws, and they have spent their influence monies to dominate the world's economy at resource spending.
Can Germany, or any other country for that matter, resign from trade agreements or rules, when it believes it proper, and just ban monsanto from dealing in the country? I know that this case is an EU rules one, but the multinational corporations seem to have more say in international law than do the national citizens. I think that this situation makes many people feel helpless and get mad and violent.

FRANKFURT, April 21 (Reuters) - Monsanto Co (MON.N), the world's biggest seed company, has filed suit against the German government's decision to ban genetically modified (GMO) maize, the company said on Tuesday.
The German government banned the cultivation and sale of GMO maize despite European Union rulings that the biotech grain is safe.
The ban affects Monsanto's MON 810 maize, which may no longer be sown for this summer's harvest, the government said.
A Monsanto spokesman said Germany's action to restrict Mon 810 was an "arbitrary ban" that violated EU rules.
He said EU member states can invoke a safeguard clause against an already approved plant but such a move required new scientific evidence and none existed to support the ban.
