Panic
Panic is a sudden fear which dominates or replaces thinking and often affects groups of people or animals. Panics typically occur in disaster situations, or violent situations (such as robbery, home invasion, a shooting rampage, etc.) which may endanger the overall health of the affected group. The word panic derives from the Greek πανικός, "pertaining to Pan", the god of woods and fields who was the source of mysterious sounds that caused contagious, groundless fear in herds and crowds, or in people in lonely spots. Panic is also known as an acute case of anxiety.

Why are so many trying to spread panic on DU?

3. I haven't seen enough "panic" on DU to warrant this OP.
People have different life situations &, therefore, opinions as you do, perhaps? Just skip over the threads that are troubling to you & look for ones that are in lock-step with your thinking, so that you might feel more secure.

:)

5. No panic. Dissemination of information.
The flu 'situation' is evolving very fast and is quite fascinating to follow. Thus far, there is no reason to panic. The virus appears to be mild.

Not that most of us could have predicted the magnitude of the event- which is pretty much the same case here, just in another discipline: epidemiology as opposed to macroeconomics.

reason to panic. At least not yet. When/if we begin to see the deaths vs. confirmed cases ratio (as in Mexico) give cause to worry, I'll reconsider my level of concern. So far, a couple cases here in Texas with no deaths. For now, I'm still planning my weekender in San Antonio in three weeks.

37. That's why I mentioned CNN earlier. Not to endorse their coverage/sensationalism, but
to point out their obvious glee at the prospect of both a pandemic and the ensuing panic, which, as far as I can tell, they are attempting to incite. It's quite a spectacle.

38. Almost 20 years ago (I've repeated this story before)
when I worked for a Japanese company (yes, me, Mr. UAW, I did) the flu was hitting our office really hard, and the Japanese Managers were in a Panic (there's that word again). they ORDERED everyone in the office to wear sterile masks, they installed toilet seat cover dispensers in the bathrooms, and threatened to fire anyone who called in sick once those measures were instituted. When a labor board complaint was filed over the firing threat, the Manager who threatened everyone's jobs was 'recalled' to japan.

Silly times call for common sense. Not panic.
