1. 6.8% mortality.
Fun fact: the 1918 Spanish flu had a mortality rate of about 2.5-5% and was the second deadliest epidemic in human history after the medieval Black Death.

7. Of KNOWN cases....
The likelihood that every person who has contracted this has been identified is remote in the extreme...probably dozens of cases not reported for every reported case...

Assuming the 75 kids in New York did indeed contract it...that will make over 100 in the US, all mild, no deaths, non hospitalized...

3. 6.8% mortality rate is fairly high.
Although I would expect the rate to drop some if the virus goes pandemic. It will mutate as it spreads and via natural selection, variants with lower death rates tend to be favored.

5. I agree with you. What was the initial mortality rate for SARS?
There are always some people here at DU who are content to laugh themselves to death. It happens whenever one of these "catastrophe" issues arises.

11. I don't know on SARS, but on viruses like Ebola...
Edited on Sat Apr-25-09 04:52 PM by roamer65
they tend not to go pandemic due to their very high mortality rates. Those types of viral infections tend to "burn out" before an epidemic can begin.

If this virus has a high transmission rate, along with the 6.8% mortality, it very well could be a "rough ride". IHMO, it definitely has pandemic properties as stated by the WHO.

4. Over what period of time, from diagnosis to your current tally?
That is not such a small mortality.

12. Yes. Like me. Although last week I was really sick with flu like symptoms.
I am hoping that if it was Swine that that would be the worst of it. Hope

14. You might want to get your IgM and IgG levels for the virus checked.
That way you'll know. IgM means you have an active infection. IgG means you have built some immunity to it after having had it already.

You probably knew that but maybe somebody else will find that information useful.

I'm a little worried because I have a trip coming up in a couple of weeks. I always get sick when I fly anyway.
